Why is that? I'm curious because I'm not part of that community.

It is a community that is strongly divided in 3. You have the hardcore 2D fans who only like the 2D fans, they praised Mania and hate on everything else. Then you have the Adventured 3D fans, who liked the Adventure games but hate on the more recent "Boost" 3D games and are constantly asking for Adventure 3. Then you have the fans of the modern "boost" games, they think Forces looks good and are looking forward to it. Because the fanbase is so divided, the critics don't know how to score these games without offending one of the 3 factions.

Okey, I think I get it. I always thought that the vast majority of the Sonic community was divided between the first two groups. I wasn't really a fan of the 2D games at all, but I actually enjoyed a bit Generations and Colors, so I'm not sure in what part I'd be in XD. I think that, no matter how I enjoyed those two games, Sonic games lack a sense of better game design. Sometimes they feel too much telegraphed, and more than skills is a process of trial and error and memorize those stages. So, I don't think that the 3D formula doesn't work per se, it's just badly executed. Again, I'm talking based on 4 games I've played of the modern run (Colors, Lost World, Secret Rings and Generations), so that's not a really grounded opinion.
