So playing through Super Mario Odyssey, it made me realize that Nintendo pratically reinvented every single of its major franchises and/or genre that have been released on the Switch.Zelda is a completely different take on the franchise.Mario while being inspired by 64, does its things so well(and with 64 being such an old game, bringing back its formula can be said to be doing something new) and bring so much new stuff to the table(with the possesing mechanic being possibly considered as a game changing idea).Splatoon 2 is such a fresh idea and being a new franchise(not to mention that the audience for the first one was restricted due to the Wii U) it can still be considered a new idea.ARMS for better or worse, is such a different take on the 3D fighter genre.
All this "fresh takes" on existing franchises or existing ideas made me think about possible spin offs or reinventions of Nintendo IPs that I would like to see. Here are some of my ideas:
1) A Zelda RPG spin-off: Thats a rather obvious one and a idea that is already circulating on peoples mind since the release of BOTW.The combat on BOTW was so good that I thought it could be a great fit for a action RPG, wether it is Souls inspired or not.Get BOTW, add RPGs mechanics such as lvling up and stats, cut the world size by half so that it can have a more concentrated level design(which could benefit more a RPG.Think of Dark Souls to understand what I mean), and have a strong story and you have another 90+ score in the Switch.
2) A Mario and Luigi game inspired by Mario Odyssey: Now this is the one that I most want to see happening. Its no secret that the Mario and Luigi series have become rather stale lately. Not only because it is falling into mediocricy in terms of narrative and storytelling(Looking at you Paper Jam!), but that its combat system has seen almost no evolution over the years, being basically the same since the first game, way back in the GBA era. What I want to see happen here is that the next Mario and Luigi game be about travelling the world, much like Odyssey, with them visisting the kingdoms while on their quest. In this case, I would even recommend some crossover. For example:From the 10 or so Kingdoms on the game, 4 would be already existing ones first introduced in Mario Odyssey. That way, not only they could interest people that played Odyssey to try out the game, but could cut down costs for the development(since it would be reussing assets), while also being a wholly original game, with its own original casts of support charachters and villains(Im thinking Bowser Inside Story levels of storytelling quality).
Which brings up my next point:Bringing the game to a trully 3D enviroment could reinvent the franchise. Not only it would offer a much more interesting game visually, but being an actual 3D game could open up all kinds of gameplay oportunities. For the overworld part, they could think of any number of new kind of puzzles and ways to interact with the world(like in Odyssey), and for the gameplay, while I still want to keep it turn based, could be changed or expanded in many ways.Doesnt the game have some action RPG elements(like the time based reaction to atacks)?Well, now positioning could be important as an example of application. The horizon is the limit!
3) A new Punch-Out taking cues from ARMS: Though I never played Punch-Out before, I have heard great things for it.And while I also didnt buy ARMS, I did play the demo, and had a great time.So it got me thinking:Why dont Punch-Out take cues from that game(Not the extendable arms part, but rather the rest, such as the different kinds of arenas with hazards, the movement in the arena and its overall importance to the genre) and make a single player focused game out of it?Make a Rocky Bamboa kind of story out of it, like Little Mac being a newbie(So, Im basically suggesting a reboot) and his jorney to the top of the world, with all the drama and plot twists in between.Assuming they nail the gameplay like they have with ARMS(My opinion), it could be one hell of a game.
4) A new FPS or third person shooter: Seeing the suceess of Splatoon, it made me remember how much fun I had playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark way back in the Nintendo 64.This is kind of a wishful thinking(and not really based on any game that Nintendo released recently.I just kind of put this one here because I wanted to lol), but I wished that one of Nintendo developers, ideally Retro, made a Perfect Dark inspired game, where you would infiltrate places and complete objectives, with an awesome sci-fi story behind it.
So thats about it!I do have some other games that I want to see getting a new sequel(Golden Sun!!!!) but those are the ones that come on the top of my head that could really work and become great games. So what do you guys think.Have any ideas yourselfs?
My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
