I get that higher storage requirements are to be expected with higher graphical fidelity, but those numbers just sound absurd and lazy.

I doubt first party games sizes are related to laziness. They know there consoles inside and out. It could just be, you know, content? Gears 4 is even 100+GB on PC.

I suppose it's possible, but I don't seem to encounter that issue on my PC where you'd expect even less efficient storage space.

For instance, I play Witcher 3 with all DLC at beautiful (actual) 4k. Witcher 3 is an undeniably massive game. Total disk space for all of that with DLC included: about 50gb.

I think these numbers the OP listed are far from optimized.

Wow, I didn't even think of that. You ended that discussion right there lol.

First party titles are almost always the most optmised though. No matter the platform.

So I have an Xbox One S and an 8TB HDD (humble brag) and I'm upgrading to an Xbox One X next week. There an option to update games early in the settings. A few of my games have already updated via random downloads. Probably one per day. These aren't small updates, though!

Quantum Break now tops 100gb and that doesn't even include the 70 something GB for the TV show. Just now, Halo 5 started a 15GB just update that'll push it near 110GB when all is said and done. Gears 4 tops 100GB and Titanfall just jumped to almost 70GB yesterday!

Like I said, I have 8TB and I know about the settings. There's going to be some gamers with 1TB internal (which will probably be more like less than 800gb usable for games). AND they're going to have to download a fuck ton of updates on day one.

I foresee a lot of unhappy gamers--at least on that first day or two.

I have a 500GB Xbox One S and I never run into any issues because for one thing, I always buy physical. For two? I install a game, beat the game, delete the game and install the next game I am going to play. I never get below 60%, even with all my Xbox 360 games installed.

People with 1TB shouldn't have a problem at all. The only reason it would become a problem is due to laziness and wanting everything installed all at once.

I wish these things were a lot cheaper, then we'd have some progress!!

Part of the reason Vita failed is it only came with enough data to fit 2 or 3 games then you had to buy a ton of memory cards; which would be exactly the same as buying more HDDs.

Now that 14GB download for LA Noire is just a joke now, but wasn't there a "project" by Microsoft to allow users to just download the necessary files to keep the file size at a minimal? When will that happen again?

I have a feeling that's going to end up being snake oil. I mean, that method is practically DRM by design if they even got it off the ground.

Samsung expects solid state storage to be near price parity with HDD by 2020. We will have 32, 64, 128, & 256TB SSD's in the next few years. 1TB of internal storage in a Portable PS4 will be possible by 2020, at a very reasonable price. If Sony moves to PS5 and builds a mobile version of it, games could be built to 720p for it from day one, which is plenty for a 5" screen and they can build with lower res textures in mind from the start to save even more space.

Yeah this is one of Switch weaknesses. Hopefully they do get cheaper.
