Opinions:

 If the PS3 outsells 360 by 5-10%, are they actually catching up in the gaming market?  If you figure that somewhere between 10-15% at least of PS3 buyers are buying for Blu-Ray and will buy very few games and accessories (a small percentage will buy none), what is the effect?

How much does PS3 have towin by in the Americas to really start catching up in overall games sales and the like? 

Curious for opinions on this one....

I posted this elsewhere too, but thought it would make an interesting discussion.

My opinion (I can't be flamed because it's just an opinion. Live with it, society has come to this).

Ps3 has to sell 3% of the total X360 sales to catch up. The reason will come soon.

well, Sony's 'overtaking' is sped up by Blu-Ray winning, and was slowed last year by the release of Halo3 and other 360 exclusives.

It might take a few years, but at the end of this gen, PS3 will sell more in US than 360

Right now, the sales are so close, it's within a margin of error on who is outselling who hardware wise.

The ps3 and 360 have similar attach rates (ps3 sometimes even higher) on non-shooter games (DMC4, Assassin's Creed, Burnout Paradise, Need for Speed, etc), but the 360 has better attach rates on the shooters in America.--which should be obvious to most anyhow.

GTAIV, GT5:P, and MGS4 should tell us a lot about the ps3's performance in America in the coming months. Those 3 games start the ps3's heavyweights for the year.

As of now, the 360 is still winning America; however, the ps3 has definitely picked up momentum lately and I think the tide may be starting to change.  But I think the situation is far from naming a victor between the ps3 and 360 in America....a long tough battle is ahead in America.

*Now waiting for Wii trolls to come in and derail thread and say, "Hehe, the Wii has already won America," even though the OP is comparing the ps3 & 360.*

if u look at sales of some multiplateform game, u will see these games sell very well on PS3. In fact, considering the userbase in NA, they even sell better on PS3 than on Xbox360.

but people that buy PS3 also buy games.

I doubt that there are so many movie lover buying the PS exclusively for the BR player.

Yes the PS3 is catching up in America. And with the recent MGS4 bundle with the PS3. I couldn't imagine what the numbers will look like :)

All those MGS fans June 12, 2008 is the day that you convert into PS3 users..lol

The Blu-Ray argument is stupid IMO. Using a PS3 for blu-ray doesnt bar you from buying videogames.

You could say the same thing about people buying a second Xbox360, for either more reliability, to replace older ones, or for the new HDMI version.

I'd say the percentage difference between the two are pretty close.

And as someone else stated, if you take the big games like Assassins Creed and Uncharted vs Mass Effect, and include only areas outside of Japan, the attach rate is higher on the PS3. That fact is irrevelant of course other than to disprove the PS3 sold solely as a BR player argument.

I can't wait for Microsoft to do that and suicide out of the gaming market !
