There has been alot of debate on birdo's gender. In a manual for one of the marios they refer to birdo as a he but birdo lays eggs, and look at him/her. 

 

Could it be possible that birdo is a hermaphrodite.

So could anybody answer my question on birdo's gender?

I would refer to Birdo as "it". :)

I think originally birdo was male, i.e. in SMB2 birdo was pink but had no bow or rings or pretty eyes. However, as time went on birdo's got mistaken internally as a girl, due to being pink, and someone at Nintendo drew birdo more girly and basically is the first game character to receive a sex change.

 Yep.  I've still got the instruction guide to prove it some where.

Only human hermaphrodite I know of in gaming is Poison from Final Fight.

 Well even in SMB2 the instruction booklet describes him as "A guy that thinks he's a girl" that shoots the eggs out of his mouth to prove it.
