Forums - Nintendo - How will we preserve DS/3DS on Switch?

Something like this could work well.

The Switch screen is big enough for the DS games to work on the side. Maybe they would recomend you to play on portable rather than docked, to allow the touch part to work.  I really want to see Etrian Odyssey games ported to the Switch like these.

I was gonna point you to looking at Android-based DS emulators, but Hiku beat me to it...

Well duh, I know those exist. But what about in docked mode?

If you hold the switch vertically the screen is roughly the size of a both screens of a DS/3DS...

Again, what about in docked mode?

So you hold the console vertically? Thats ... very very awkward xD

Trust Nintendo to come up with yet another implementation that involves your phone for docked mode =P

The fuck is that? I thought the Wii U displayed the bottom DS screen on the gamepad and the top on the screen for the DS emulation. That just looks awkward ... and I don't think that game requires the same level of touch controls?

Yoshi's Island DS has no touch controls. It's a situation like Contra 4 where the gameplay stretches across both screens. You wouldn't be able to do that in an acceptable manner with Gamepad screen and TV.

So for games that involve both screens being seeable at once you'd have the screens awkwardly crunched onto one screen?

For games requiring two screens and possibly touch controls you'd have to turn the Switch vertically?

These options are sounding terrible ... but maybe they worked well on Wii U? Lol

xD Hhahaha okay this genuinely made me laugh.I don't think Nintendo is at that stage just yet!

Not all games would work well in a side by side method. Contra 4 comes to mind.

Given that Switch's vertical resolution is bigger than those of two DS screens combined, such games could be converted in a similar manner as vertical shoot'em ups that were ported to home consoles; fat black bars on each side of the screen.

A flexible emulator that allows side by side, stacked atop each other or swapping between the two screens with a button press would solve most problems and each game could provide the options that make sense for the given game. In some instances only one format might apply, but in many all three could work. Similarly, games that require touch input could be made playable in portable mode only. There's already VOEZ on the Switch eShop that is portable-only because of touch controls, although that specific example might change soon or has already changed via an update to the game that incorporates button controls.

I'd be perfectly ok with the screens stacked on top of one another.  But I could see many other people complaining about the size as well as the wasted space.

why do they need to be preserved?

Hold onto your DS and 3DS

I've still got mine, but if VC 3DS (and DS) games start coming to the Switch, I'd buy them there before buying them on my 3DS.  Just a better feeling (and looking) system overall.

But how would the controls work?

You use the joy-cons / pro controller?

Touch screen based games, you would have to play non-docked.

That sounds....awkward.  And if the switch is docked, the vertical screen wouldn't even come into play.  I'd be wanting some way to play it portably, and a vertical screen wouldn't work, unless Nintendo made some kind of attachment so the joycons could slide into the vertical sides.

Threads like this makes me realize that keeping my old DS will be an amazing idea right now. Also some games can easily be ported. However getting something like Elite Beat Agents to work.....now that will be weird.
