Microsoft's most egregious error is that they thought more Halo and Gears would sustain them forever. They stayed pat with their hand while everyone else kept drawing more cards.

I always go back and forth on this one. While I do think Microsoft needs new ips that define their brand, it's not exactly like Sony's 1st party has been any different right now. Sony's 1st party has been almost entirely reliant on old IP. Sure, they now have Horizon. And next year they'll have Days Gone, and Detroit. However, Detroit probably won't do much to sell consoles. Days Gone might take off.

And Bloodborne.

Granted, they might have believed Quantum Break would become the 4th Pillar but you can't put all your eggs in one basket like that. One of the things I like about Sony in the home console space is that they keep pushing new IP out into the wild.

Finding the games that will define your brand is a continuous process, not a destination that you can reach and then stop working.

I doubt they actually thought that. To me it always felt that they just didn't want to commit more resources on risky 1st party projects. So they just went with the flow and hoped for the best. There is a lot of business going on behind the scenes and I believe every step they took or did not take was deliberate.

And let's be honest, even if they had like 5 more high profile exclusives to lean on they still would've lost badly to PS4.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Fuck MS. Pathetic First party studios that have turned into yearly franchise factories. Xbox is getting decimated globally so desperation is kicking in.
Let them waste the money, PS4 will keep crushing xbox

eh, it's not as if Sony have never bought a console exclusive before...

The thing is Sony uses their money to first make 1st games and then to "buy" exclusives.  Microsoft just is "buying" exclusives.

So MS has no 1st party games?

I mean didn't Forza 7 just come out, they funded Cuphead, three games probably in early 2018.

So just buying exclusives? Maybe not.

Funny to see so much hatred for form Sony fans when the Ps4 is basically an Xbox One with an handfull more games and slightly better graphics (atm).

As others reported, buying 3rd party exclusivity is something Sony has been doing since forever.

But I agree the XB at the moment is redundant, and people less then a year ago still wanted Nintendo to make a PS4-clone console.

Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 are Q1 2018, what's the 3rd game?

Crackdown 3.

Also, I forgot MS funded Super Lucky's Tale which actually doesn't look half bad. Maybe MS has faith in it given it has a physical release, could be medicore though. Cuphead should have had a physical release for the holiday.

Well... if i had a choice, i'd take Microsoft out and bring back old SEGA. But i guess just having two is fine aswell.

I agree, MS has been a disappointment. The OG Xbox bridged PC and console gaming, the 360 bridged that gap and delved into JRPG funding original projects... but then... they scaled back (oh the pun) and they are still scaling back.

Not that this exclusive matters for anything. Can't compare to the plethora of PS4 exclusives, but just because now they are only adding negatives to the industry rather than any positives.

The X1 easily outsold the last two Sega consoles. Maybe Sega should just make games.

MS had a push into JRPGs because MS had the impression those still mattered and they kinda don't anymore unless you really want Japan. Even Sony has pulled back on Japanese games and relies on 3rd parties for that. If you're among the relatively small US audience that wants JRPGs, stick with Sony and NIntendo.

MS only add negatives to the industry? They still put out and fund notable content. Without MS we'd also see a less competitive Sony. People are entitled to opinions but you got it all wrong.

Nothing against timed exclusive, are part of the market right now. The thing that really annoys me is the fact of canceling, and not investing in proprietary games but on timed "exclusive" like PUBG, which is a game already available elsewhere, you know, so not an exclusive but an "exclusive" in MS style...
MS canceled Scalebound, lose Remedy as a second party which is now working on a multiplatform project, disbanded Lionhead. Phil Spencer said he want to invest in first party game and that timed exclusive or timed content suck, and then at E3 2017 MS presented a lot of indies timed exclusive and now it's trying to extend the timed exclusivity for PUBG? Come on, it's simply ridicolous..... Ok to timed exclusive (and content) but first produce some first party game. If MS invest in first party game rather than timed exclusives, we as gamers will got more AAA games. It feels so bad when they canceled Scalebound...

Crackdown 3... Sea of Thieves... two games announced in 2014 and 2015 respectively, heavily delayed and look set to bomb critically and commercially. Though Crackdown 3 may sell sufficiently regardless. Not really examples that inspire confidence in microsofts dedication to 1st party content.

There's a worrying lack of future-projects announced, and with 2017 seemingly only having 2 major 1st party titles on XBO (Forza 7, Halo Wars 2) one of which also bombed commerically, the 1st party situation seems dire to me.

Your response is completely irrelevant. I'm responding to someone who claims MS is just buying exclusive content like PUBG, its objectively not true.

Do I have faith all these games mentioned will succeed? Not really, but I look forward to playing them anyway. That's the business, not everything succeeds while Gears, Halo, and Forza helps fund all of that. We're unfortunately at a point where 1st parties are taking less risks.

I was genuinely shocked nothing or little was announced at E3, from both MS and Sony. Probably because both companies are still making good on promised titles.

So again, your response is irrelevant but I responded anyway.
