see here is where your theory falls apart.... what if they also plan on dropping the price.

hm... think about that one.

What theory? The question was if they are making profit on hardware, the answer is "no, they aren't". There's no theory here.

That the price will equal what they have to pay for it

I though that it was near $400 last year, but the question is: how much do they sell it to retail for? I would have thought selling it at a higher cost in Europe would help that, as I would assume the product cost is very very similar to the retail cost there

I would expect they do a little better on the 80Gb, software BC emulation costs nothing to add and I woudn't think that these days a 80Gb HDD cost really much more than a 40Gb HDD, so the extra costs are just around the USB ports and such....

Actually according to sony they were loosing most money on the 80gb ps3, the reason they dis cuntinued it I believe.

Did you read the quote I posted above? There's a part which says:

"Currently, the cost is higher than the price, but toward the second half the fiscal year '08 we could catch up."

It doesn't get any clearer.

No ,they'll have to rely on the PS2/P to cover the losses they make on hardware.

Shame that...

I did, but that is not neccessarily the cost in all regions, as the cost is different

Discontinued ?

Isn't the MGS4 bundle in NA a 80Gb bundle ?

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Since he didn't mention any region in particular, I have to assume that he's giving a proper answer to a question from an investor, and that means saying whether they're losing money on hardware or not (most likely by taking the overall hardware revenue vs cost of production).

Remember that this is an investors conference we're talking about, not your average PR guy doing an interview.

No no, and no again.

At least not until October of this year.

hey boys i think the answer is simple!!! they make profit just on hardware..in europe where it lately makes around 40-50% of total sales ,the ps3 is sold for 640dollars so if they lose money from us and japan they make them from europe .

My opinion.

Cost to produce
But Sony is spending money advertising + other costs.

I see it PS3 making money by itself (without needing PSP and PS2 to support it) in late this year.

Soriku (Feb 10/08): In 5 years the PS3/360 will be dead.
