Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: We never expected the Switch to sell this much

I can see why they would have some doubt after the failure of the Wii U as well as doing a system like the Switch. It was uncertain how much it would sell all the way up to its release.

Doesn't really explain why stock to Japan is so starved, a ship from China should be able to reach Japan in hours.

What I found funny is people blaming Nintendo for not expecting the actual demand for the Switch, but as far as we know, the console was supposed to be dead on arrival.

I believe this 100%

Nintendo have been proving for years how out of touch they are with the market. Luckily for them they have a dedicated fanbase who are thrilled with minimal effort.

Artificial demand and fake news have become one!

Perhaps Japan wants it more strongly than any of the other regions. Japan loves handhelds.

The CEO of Nintendo said the Switch could outsell the Wii so I don't see it as true. However I think Nintendo underestimated initial demand thinking it will be like the DS and have the system sales explode later.

That doesn't mean he actually excpeted it to happen though .... I think Nintendo needed an air of positivity after a terrible January reveal and the flop that was Wii Poo

It's certainly is exciting to think that the Switch and PS4 are doing so well. Can't wait to see how well the Switch does after two Pokemon titles and a Mario xD

Yea, in his position it's essentially mandatory that one project a sense of optimism at all times, only ever admiting to doubts in retrospect. Saying "eh, the Switch might end up selling well" probably wouldn't encourage the shareholders all that much :p

They clearly underestimated demand for it, but that makes sense coming off of the Wii U.

Hole this article doesn't look very promising about resolving stock problems, especially this last part:

"And Nintendo wasn’t too optimistic about meeting demand in the near future: they plan to ship 10 million units this year, but said that “in reality there are 20 million people who actually want to buy one.”

Does this mean we can expect shortages to last until well into 2018? It’s going to take a while to manufacture (and ship) all those units to meet demand of an extra 20 million people who want one."

Shortages? What shortages?

If you want a Switch but can't find one right now, just import it from germany. We have plenty! =D

This honestly sounds like artifically stoking shortages to some degree. I think Nintendo does like being just below where the demand line is as it generates a lot of free buzz for them.

It doesn't take that long for a boat to travel from China in this day and age.
