Forums - Sales - Kotaku - Switch is Dominating PS4 in Japan

Come on now, are we really going to compare sales of a handheld with that of a console in Japan to make the Switch look good? But this is Kotaku so...

Switch doesnt need ps4 to look good. Should kotaku have compared it to the psvita then? (No youll say just 3ds only)

That said ps4 is a better choice than vita and switch is a home console as well. Beside what does it matter? You have no problem comparing nintendo things outside of Japan (like in UK) so stop complaining lol

I'm sure you realise that Japan is unique as it's the only country where consoles sell less than handhelds. Not just sell less - consoles are virtually dead there. PS4 is not a handheld so why compare it to one in Japan? The Switch is also a console so it's fair to compare to other consoles in the UK where console gaming isn't dead.

Wrong. We're talking about 2 specific markets - one of which the PS4 cannot compete in. Switch can compete on both fronts, the PS4 only on one. Instead of comparing the sales on the front that both can compete on, Kotaku is comparing sales in the one that the PS4 cannot compete on. Spelt it out for you - I'm sure you get it now.

So its nintendo's fault that ps4 isnt keeping up with switch in japan? How about UK where nintendo is very weak in, can we not compare ps4 to switch there too? Handhelds dont dont do to well i think there so no point in making comparisons.

Btw nothing can compete with switch in japan, so what to compare it to? Ps4 is the 2nd best selling hw (and its not doing too bad) currently in japan so its ok imo. But you cant help but feel upset with a nintendo win. I dont have to spell that out for you, your doing it yourself

It's not Nintendo's fault - just the way Japanese society has moved to gaming outside of their homes. It would be a waste for Sony to make a handheld just for 1 dwindling country. Sony is weak in Japan because of a lack of hardware. Nintendo is weak in the UK not because of a lack of hardware.

And if nothing can compete with Switch in Japan, so why make a comparison article? Might as well make an article about how Switch is dominating the X1 in Japan.

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't this common for new consoles?

The Switch is practically brand-new, obviously it's going to outsell the competition!

It's more common for new consoles to struggle and get outsold by older consoles for a while.

In the Japanese market in recent times the 3DS came slow out of the gate, the Vita too, the Wii U as well, the PS4 also, the XB1 was and is a complete disaster. That's an entire generation of systems that didn't start well. Switch is the first console in a long time that consistently positioned itself at the top of the weekly Japanese hardware charts in its first year of availability.

Also worth of note, this thread/Kotaku compares Switch vs. PS4 launch aligned, so Switch in 2017 vs. PS4 in 2014.

Oh thats right! Forgot that the other consoles and handhelds this gen had a bad or decent start. Glad Switch is changing things!

Comparing to the PS4 makes sense considering its the no1 console atm.
But for Japan its a pretty useless considering how the market it is.

Right now the interesting battle is Switch vs the 3DS. 3DS is still ahead weeks aligned, but in about 7 weeks it will start seeing massive gains. Will be interesting to see if the Switch can keep up.

I agree with your first part, its just some being mad because whatever.

Reguarding your 2nd part of your post. 3ds will be ahead because switch wont have enough units. 3ds did 4.3mil in its first year. In terms of units 3ds will win but switch accomplishments far exceed 3ds first year. SW sales but its the fact its profitable and at a higher cost than 3ds. Even twice as much after the price cut

No it's not, PS4 had one of worst 1st year ever for any gaming hardware in Japan. And this comparing from Kotaku is about launch year for PS4 and launch year for Switch.

Actually Switch is selling better even than PSP despite fact that's still heavily supply constrained.

Wii U long time ago left in dust Vita, Wii U and PS4, so there is no reason to compared Switch sales with them any more, Switch is now battling against much serious players in Japan.

With Mario Odyssey launch Switch will also have huge boost in shipments, most likely around 100k, we will see how much stock Nintendo will have from Mario Odyssey boost and for Holiday season.
