Yeah Odyssey has been much better handled because both the January and E3 trailers were awesome; the former pushed the "look, an ambitious Mario for the first time since Galaxy and a 64-eque 3D Mario for the first time since 2002" angle while the latter did a great job of showcasing the Capture mechanic.

XB2 by contrast had two weak trailers that failed to capitalize on arguably the biggest draw of the series; mind-blowing worlds.

I get that they want to focus more on story to show audiences that this won't be another XCX, but the problem is that what they've shown just isn't interesting and makes the game seem like just another generic, dime-a-dozen JRPG.

At least they'll have another shot for the next Nintendo Direct.

And that's all it would take; one really good trailer.

So far they've just done a totally inadequate job of selling this as an amazing true successor to the original Xenoblade, but there's still time to turn things around. And I hope they do; I'm not being negative just for the sake of being negative, I legitimately want this to be amazing, it's just that so far, to paraphrase Shulk, I'm just not Really Feeling It.

What I usually do is just try to have no expectations, and that way I can't be disappointed.

I wish I could do that, but I can't, one of my shortcomings is I tend to care too much and get overly emotionally invested in things. XD

I'm very emotional myself But I guess it's because I have such a huge backlog that I'm able to do that.

I do have to disagree with you pretty staunchly on the first trailer.  Not because of my feelings, but because it actually had the furthest reach of any trailer the franchise has had, currently with over 2 million views.   Regardless of what we think individually, the first trailer had a good impact.  The second trailer was weaker, I'll give you that.

But this whole "dime-a-dozen JRPG" narratuve has had me scratching my head for ages.  I've looked at trailers for a ton of JRPGs and if the first trailer was what the average one looked like, I would be more into the genre :P

The first trailer I think was inflated due to being part of the big Switch reveal which was probably the highest profile Nintendo event ever in terms of online exposure.

XB2's trailers so far look to me like they could've been from pretty much any run-of-the-mill JRPG from the past 5 years or so. Aside from the awesome music, nothing really makes it stand out.

It stayed a relevant trailer and accumulated views for a long while. And the presentation thing didn't strike me as inflating it as much as you seem to think since other trailers didn't get these numbers, like Octopath Traveler which is still under 300k views.  And the Xenoblade 2 trailer has a similar like to view ratio to the Splatoon 2 trailer and a strong like to dislike ratio.  The trailer was positively received and did well as a reveal trailer.

And I suppose I'm not as demanding when it comes to trailers.  And less extreme when it comes to what I categorize as generic.  To me, the first trailer certainly had plenty of Xenoblade vibes.  Plenty of visual elements, artistic design choices, etc struck me as similar.  And the enormous looming living stone formation was always something that caught my eye.  I never once felt the sense of scale lacking.  But everyone is looking for different things.

Imo, what hurt the second trailer the most was the unpolisjed vocal work.  I appreciate the effort to have english VA ready ASAP, but they should have made the trailer Japanese and released an English version later when the vocals were more up to scratch.  Not saying the trailer was perfect or anything, but in my mind it certainly showed the project had big ambitions.

It was less a matter of scale and more that the grassy Titan and other areas from the trailers look kinda bland and boring, lacking the inspired design of the first two games.

For me, the grassy Titan reminded me immediately of the leg regions of Bionis.  But like I said earlier, longer shots of the landscales briefly shown in the E3 trailers would habe been better.

I dunno, the Bionis just seemed more vibrant to me with a more attractive colour pallette. XB2's equivalent just looks kind of dull.
