Forums - Gaming - Anyone still seriously saying the Switch is going to fail?

I still feel like Wii numbers are possible. I do not see it reaching DS numbers but I knew from the beginning it had a Wii-like aura around it and so far, that expectation has been realized.

Switch isn't going to fail. The final say was when the Pokemon Company announced a full scale, presumably HD mainline Pokemon game would be coming to the device. That alone will let it outsell the Wii U...

Definitely will be interesting from time to time to revisit all those "Switch doom" threads we had before Switch launch.

"Splatoon won't sell 250k!"

Splatoon will sell on par with the Wonderful 101.

Pokemon won't release next year.

Don't shoot the messanger tho

I mean I can't see them taking another year gap so soon, they aren't saying it won't come out next year anyways.

It's their first HD game, those are often an arduous process.

Everyone by now knows it won't bomb now. People will now say that it will fail i.e not meet its goals. So now people will say it will not pass 3DS + Wii U sales. Later on I expect people to say it will not pass 100 million. The more time passes the higher the floor people can reasonably predict. These people will always predict the most pessimistic predictions.

And if it does pass 100 million, then it's still not that impressive because it didn't sell as much as the DS or PS2, etc.

Well, depends on what you consider failure. Personally I dont think its gonna reach 40m units sold lifetime. Some people in this forum would consider that a failure. Not me tho.

Why do you think it will fall short of 40 million when it's trajectory is well above that?

If anyone thinks switch will fail I don't know what to say to them.

But I'm told by some here that if it sells what I think it will (45-50m) it will be a failure which makes no sense to me.

my thoughts exactly.  A middling console methinks

Isn't gen-on-gen a "success?" That's greater market share. I guess people will hold anything less than 3DS+WiiU number against it, but it isn't really for just one or the other market.

*raises hand*

I still believe it won't even do wiiU numbers. Then again, all it has to do to be a success is beat the wiiU numbers.

I guess the comparison doesn't apply to PS4 because it has a handheld counterpart (had?), unlike the Switch. Either way, yeah it's a silly comparison.

I guess that's the logic people use. Although, from my observations, people say Switch should outsell 3DS + Wii U due to Nintendo moving all resources onto one platform. Does Sony actually do anything for the Vita though? It would seem they also dedicate all resources to one platform. I agree with you, either way, it's silly logic.

I don't really see a problem with that argument as long as the conclusions people take from it are consistent with the argument at larger. The Vita was marketed as a successor to the PSP, and is considered a failure. The PS4 was marketed as the successor to the PS3, and is considered a success. The Switch is currently marketed as the merging of Nintendo's markets, so people comparing it to a comparable 8th gen merging makes sense. It's ultimately fairly pointless (as with the majority of such comparisons), but the argument has no inherent logic breaks as long as it's presented wholly. At its core it's not much different than when people compare the overall sales of a brand in any given time period.

I still believe it won't even do wiiU numbers.

It's sold more than a third of Wii U's lifetime sales in its first 4 months and still has most of its major system selling games ahead of it, not to mention hardware revisions, holiday seasons, etc.

i wanna know the justification for not thinking it wont do WIi U numbers

Because it's on track to pass or come close to Wii Us lifetime sales in its first year alone and still hasn't had a holiday season, most of its system sellers, hardware revisions, etc.
