I wonder, and this is pure speculation on my part, ifbthis wasn't originally done to reduce power demand and save battery life for the switch. We knew that battery life for the device was around 3 hrs while playing a demanding game. Could part or the whole reason be to ensure battery life didnt reduce even more if voice char was via the switch itself

I think its a little more straight forward than all that.

Switch Hardware.

1. Battery - Already knew battery was a tight fit. By pushing off this app/features, one less battery consumer.
2. CPU Cores - Working to keep Cost of Materials, power usage, heat, etc as low as possible but wanted to maximize as much horse power for games as possible in portable mode. By pushing off this app/features, console can remain 100% utilized to the game and not process chat, online features, etc.

Then you consider that nearly 100% of folks who bought a Switch own a smartphone, Nintendo likely figured they could build a much better communication / app system on a phone that could also run seamlessly while game is also running.

Of course, it looks like a complicated p.o.s. that created more problems than it was trying to solve and will surely drive people to simply not use it. #Nintendoing

My only hope is that there is a non-app version of online play where I can just play online. Without using my phone or crazy wired headsets. I can forgo chat or just call someone directly and use a bluetooth headset.

EDIT:

I may be being too synical here. With portable system that would require your phone to get online while on-the-go a phone app also has potential benefits. But, at this time the app has several issues and the forced corded headset concept is just something that should not have been offered as the only option.

Oh plz guys!!! Seriously. Guys. Like, enough.

Skype worked perfectly fine on Windows 98 potatos. It was even compatible with Windows 95 computers. We are talking PCs with barely any megaflops or megabytes. The speakers of the Switch suck more energy than the proccessing power needed for voice chat. This is a non-issue.

Lol. It was pure speculation on my part. If that is indeed true, and I am clearly no expert on these things, then all good. Glad we got that sorted.

Because Nintendo wants phone revenue. This pushes there Switch app which will boost downloads etc. This was clearly a buisness decision not a consumer friendly practice.

I actually find Ninty's new idea quirkily wonderful, it reminds me of my mom phoning people to tell them she sent them an e-mail.

I like this kind of thread, trying to figure why, instead of just complaining.
In other foruns, every time I created a thread like that I get lots of hate, and I sound like a fanboy trying to defend the undefendable.

Well... the app is weird and the lack of voice chat in certain games is dissapointing... but besides that, I don´t see anything really strange or abnormal with Nintendo online services. Online gameplay for titles like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Codename Steam and Splatoon work very well. And it´s free (at least for now) !

I really don´t mind the lack of voice chat on games.... All my friends have smartphones so we chat using our phones anyway, when we feel like doing it.

It's not a question of why, I think that's fairly obvious. The real question is where can I buy whatever they were smoking to get THAT high?

They were smoking greed.

i'll consider this Nintendo's first draft. its very likely that they will go back and revise this over the next month or so

Did you really sounded like a fanboy or did other people made you feel that way with their comments? I can see by your avatar that you have good taste. Don't let the jelly put that fact in doubt.
