When will the Blu Ray consortium learn

In the UK at my local Superstore

KICK ASS

BLURAY 17.98 GBP

DVD 12.98 GBP

Cmon guys thats too much of a price differential.

People need to be enticed with price parity NOT a 40 percent premium.

Its still lokked at as a premium item thats why,  it will eventually come down in price,  I just hope that it doesnt come to late.

Speaking of late I have to get the numbers posted soon.

Any sign of the updated numbers ?

Here are the numbers for week ending 09/05/2010

Blu-ray Ratio 11:89     Bad week

Top 20 Blu-ray Ratio:  13:87    There are no words to describe how upset I am about this, only 18 of the Top 20     were available on Blu-ray

This is starting to get silly. I really dont know what to say to Vetteman 94.

You are being horribly let down by the Blu Ray consortium.

This should have been a breakout year for BluRay and instead its selling about 1 in 14 copies compared to DVD.

Its fair to say that at this point in time I am concerned for BluRay. We are 4 and a half years after launch and after a good start the whole product identity and sales seem to have stagnated.

DVD was at this point in its cycle (mid 2001) the only choice at many Rental stores and VHS was becoming harder and harder to find with some big studios delaying VHS release to support DVD's uptake.

Why cant we see this happening for Blu Ray. Maybe a week of Blu Ray exclusivity.

Something, Anything ?

Woooah there... Anchorman is out on Blu-ray?!!!!!

Yeah my concern for Blu-ray has risen dramatically in the last few months.  Earlier in the year when we were only getting 14-15% weeks  we were still seeing 25% weeks from the Top 20,  which is a strong indicator for adoption because it shows buying patterns of people with new releases.

There have been minor positives recently,  like some titles selling for over 50% Blu-ray,  even new releases doing that as well.  So its something to build on, but nothing to get overly exited about

There were plenty of talks about Disney and Sony Pictures doig some blu-ray exclusive deals,  like early releases and such.   But unless its on a must have title like say Iron Man 2,  its going to have little to no effect.

All I can say is early on in the year I enjoyed doing this because the numbers were tolerable,  now its painfull to put these numbers up.

This trend tells us that things are going backwards. You watch VHS will make a comeback and will wipe the floor with the competition..Watch out for Betamax too..Watch out for Vinyls also all you music downloaders.

Its funny you mention that,  since vinyls have had a minor resurgence recently.

Blockbuster Files For Bankruptcy

Blockbuster, the DVD rental chain with 5,800 stores around the world, is expected to file for bankruptcy, marking another convulsion from the shift to online entertainment.

The company has $900m (£575m) of debt that it cannot pay because its revenues are tumbling and it is sliding further into the red, and a financial restructuring deal will wipe out shareholders and all but the most senior bondholders.

Blockbuster's fortunes have been sinking since the launch of rival services which allow users to order DVDs online and receive them through the post, such as Netflix in the US. The advent of online streaming of films, and video-on-demand cable services, plus movie downloads from stores such as iTunes, has dealt a further blow. Although Blockbuster has teamed up with Hollywood studios to launch services of its own in all these areas, it has been hobbled by the costs of its extensive store network, which spans 17 countries.

In the first six months of 2010, revenues declined 16 per cent, sending losses ballooning from $9.2m in the same period last year to $134m. For several months, the company has been operating only with the forbearance of its lenders.

Management and its advisers are believed to have agreed the shape of a restructuring deal, which will put the US company into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the hope of continuing to operate a slimmed-down operation. Its UK stores are already a separate legal entity, and UK management have insisted a US bankruptcy would have "no operational impact on Blockbuster UK".

Blockbuster shut more than 500 stores in the first half of this year, with a target of almost 1,000 closures, and it is understood to have agreed to increase that total by at least a further 500. Senior bondholders – who include the corporate raider Carl Icahn – will convert some of their holdings into equity. Lower-ranking bondholders will be in effect wiped out.

As speculation mounted that the filing was imminent, the company said last night: "We continue to explore all of our options and are making good progress in our recapitalisation process. Our discussions with the studios and bondholders continue to be productive, and we have every reason to believe we will come out of the recapitalisation process financially stronger."
