This should have been a breakout year for BluRay and instead its selling about 1 in 14 copies compared to DVD. Its fair to say that at this point in time I am concerned for BluRay. We are 4 and a half years after launch and after a good start the whole product identity and sales seem to have stagnated. DVD was at this point in its cycle (mid 2001) the only choice at many Rental stores and VHS was becoming harder and harder to find with some big studios delaying VHS release to support DVD's uptake. Why cant we see this happening for Blu Ray. Maybe a week of Blu Ray exclusivity. Something, Anything ? |
Yeah my concern for Blu-ray has risen dramatically in the last few months. Earlier in the year when we were only getting 14-15% weeks we were still seeing 25% weeks from the Top 20, which is a strong indicator for adoption because it shows buying patterns of people with new releases.
There have been minor positives recently, like some titles selling for over 50% Blu-ray, even new releases doing that as well. So its something to build on, but nothing to get overly exited about
There were plenty of talks about Disney and Sony Pictures doig some blu-ray exclusive deals, like early releases and such. But unless its on a must have title like say Iron Man 2, its going to have little to no effect.
All I can say is early on in the year I enjoyed doing this because the numbers were tolerable, now its painfull to put these numbers up.
