Forums - General - Why don't Americans like hockey?

Who says hockey's boring? It's one of the most edge-of-your-seat sports, especially during a power play or the last minute of the game when the offense is piling onto the net. It's like they took soccer's low scoring and basketball's fast pace and threw it on ice. That's excitement right there.

It's a lot of fun to play too. I never tried ice hockey (can't skate worth shit), but I played a lot of street hockey with the people in my neighborhood. We had a league and everything. Good times.

There's a reason the joke "I went to a fight the other night, and a hockey game broke out" is so widely heard in the US. The overriding stereotype here is that it's a poorly-regulated sport that's basically little more than an excuse for men to get in brawls.

If it weren't for the Mighty Ducks, there'd probably be Americans who didn't even know hockey existed.
(That's a joke, naive posters).

I'm not the biggest of sports fans. But I'd sure rather watch hockey than baseball, basketball or football.

Football is fun to play, but you watch them huddle and stand around more than you watch them play. With Basketball they're scoring non stop. Why should I feel any interest when points are scored? I know it'll happen a couple dozen more times. And baseball. I consider baseball to be more of a game than a sport. Kind of like Golf.

And now that I've pissed off most American sports fans, I bid you adieu.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

Suddenly I want to go to a hockey game. :(

I guess you never saw what "the trap" can do to a hockey game, or to go half-a-period without either team getting a shot on gaol.

Don't worry, I'm an American Sports fan and I'm the same way. I'd rather watch old women weaving baskets than an NBA game, and baseball is the coginitive equivalent of taking a light nap. I think the frequent breaks in the action of football (sometimes) help it be more engaging; every player has an important role each play, and anticipating what that will be and if they will pull it off adds to the excitement. Again, sometimes; it's rare I can make it through more than a quarter of a football game before I get bored/restless.

Prehpas its the low scores comapred to games like basketball and it makes it seem less exciting.

Yea I am American and I agree.  I do enjoy football, but hockey is my favorite sport.

Why does everyone keep saying that it's so low scoring?  It really isn't...

I am severely depressed that my favorite team underperformmed this year.

To go from being the best in the league last season, and having two great years in a row, to not even  making the playoffs, really really sucks...

That's what happens when your GM doesn't even try to negotiate a contract for Briere and Drury.

Cat's out of the bag, right?

And refuses to deal with Vanek until a self-imposed deadline......and then Lowe comes and goes wild.

I think it's mostly because Americans don't grow up with hockey (excluding some northern states). Football, Baseball, Basketball, Nascar, and Golf are all at forefront. Hockey gets lost in the shuffle.
