Forums - Nintendo - Rocket League targeted for 60 FPS, 720p on Switch

Same performance and resolution in portable and docked mode!? If can they make it to run at 720p/60fps in portable mode they can make it to run at higher resolution than 720p in docked mode, we saw that with every other Switch game but it seem they don't care about better resolution in docked mode.

Same FPS as the PS4 & PS4pro.  Also the same price.

These devs are doing Nintendo right.

Maybe portable mode has lower details and docked mode has max settings or something.

No, until now we saw that docked mode is used just for higher resolution compared to portable mode, while everything else is same both modes. In this case it seems they don't want to bother at all with higher performance in docked mode and to just use same resolution in both mods, which is shame.

This should be a good indication of Switch power.
720p vs 1080p on PS4 & Xbox One but probably the same graphical fidelity.

Good for a handheld, dissapointing for a home console that came out in 2017.

But it's great to have such a game for mobile play.

Stuff like Rocket League unfortunately tend to make for fairly poor reference points, because their technical cap is significantly lower than what the PS4 and X1 can do. It's why even the standard X1 can run it at 1080p/60fps/Max~. Such comparisons tend to favour lower spec hardware, since less of its available power tend to go to waste. So it shows us what the Switch can do, but no what it can do relative to the PS4 and X1.

A good reference point would be a technically impressive title the PS4 and X1 have to make significant compromises on versus the game's technical cap (e.g. The Witcher 3), and from a developer willing to properly optimise for all platforms. The best example we have right now is DQH2, where the differences is 1080p vs 720p, 45-60fps vs 20-30fps, and graphical downgrades on the Switch. Unfortunately even DQH2 is a relatively lacking comparison, because it's not particularly well optimized on anything :p

This looks pretty darn close to the PS4 /XBONE.

Yeah, makes sense.

It's hard to compare then since FIFA 18 uses different engine and Skyrim is well... Skyrim.

even if it used the same engine, FIFA18 would be the same exact case as Rocket League. 1080p 60FPS on both PS4 and X1. Not even close to showing what X1 and especially PS4 can do.

I agree, but what does that have to do with what i said? :p My point was that games with technical caps lower than the capabilities of a member of a comparison usually make for poor reference points. Are you of the opinion Sonic pushes the PS4 past its limits?

Looks good, the mobile screen is 720p so no reason for more. I guess they decided to keep it like that for docked mode to avoid people getting more inconstant fps or because people would complain and say that the sharper image could be an advantage against portable mode players.

Well, it looks better than Knack 1 & 2. Lot's of things are happening on screen at the same time as well. Definitely an AAA game, even on PS4. Obviously Switch would never be able to run a game like Anthem (at least not without heavy downgrades), but not all AAA games are outside the realm of possibilities.

The gap between home consoles and handhelds is smaller than ever (still a big gap, but not 3DS-PS4 big or even 3DS-PS3 big). Not just in technical capabilities but also in controls.

Still don't understand why that Dragonball Fighter Z game isn't on Switch, such a bummer.

Just because this hasn't happened before, doesn't mean it's not Psyonix's goal here.

Let's say it could do 900p in the same settings but they opted for 720p 60 fps in higher settings.

That's just my guess though, we'll know more in few months.

If no one done something like that before, I don't see why exactly Psyonix would done somethin like that first, especially if they said they are "prioritizing performance over visual fidelity".

If you have exactly same performance and same resolution in potable and docked mode, that means you didnt used extra power that dock provides to work on different mode when console is docked. In other words it seems they are playing lazy here and working just on one mode that will be same for handheld and docked play.

Wonder how it will look on the big screen when docked, hopefully not too blurry. &20p mode makes sense when on the go though.

Did you buy a switch?
