Forums - Gaming - Has Microsoft given up? do they have any fight left in them?

Is microsoft fighting back?

Their trying their best 50 22.52%

As long as it doesnt co$t them, sure. 51 22.97%

They gave up 121 54.50%

Total:222

I think they're trying their best, and my vote reflects that sentiment.

In the end, isn't that what matters most? The answer, is no.

Really though, if Xbox was my platform, I wouldn't be too concerned. Yes, they have a glaring lack of exclusives, but the overall library is fine. Scorpio launch price isn't that big of a deal either. Their continued existence in the console space going forward is in question however.

They just shifted strategy. I doubt they'll leave. Not when the PC gaming side of things is just getting started.

microoft is just as involved in the PC side of things as EA. Steam and blizzard had that covered when Microsoft was taking PC exclusives and using them against Sony. Now they don't even know what their identity is.

I wouldn't underestimate MS will to compete, and the resources it can spend to do it, but it's likely they're trying to change their gaming business model favouring again PC to try and keep Windows relevant and strong and prevent Android from expanding in PC market, or at least slow it. Only time will tell us if they did in time or if it's too late for their main product.
The majority of IT users overall is already more familiar with Android than with Windows, weren't for the fact that the vast majority of them don't need, or don't need anymore, a PC, Windows would be doomed to marginality. A rich one, potentially still above 1 billion users WW, but they wouldn't be anymore the majority, so MS would remain rich and maybe become even richer, but it would lose power and the ability to decide where PC market goes. This hasn't happened yet, and it could never happen, but if MS hasn't already done what's necessary to avoid it, probably it's too late.

Microsft tried to appealing to a broader audience more than ever before.

But their first party power has gotten weaker rather than stronger. Alot of bad management.

I echo the sentiment of some here. MS did gave up, but this gen only. The way I see it, if the XBX parts eventually fall in price, the console could become their mainline model and de facto system for the future. The games will not get any better and the benefits of ultra HD will probably not continue as people think of price over high quality pictures because unlike most would want to believe, not everyone has SPACE for ultra HD tv sets and when MS realizes these sales are a small fraction of actual XBX sales, they might drop the new developer rules and allow relocation of resources towards high quality textures and more realistic games.

Even if they do give up, all they need to do is keep producing the XBX into next gen. Performance beyond it's specs doesn't really climb much higher. Unless Sony decides to go for portability like Nintendo next gen, newer consoles will not attain significantly better resolutions or performance. MS has officially created a de facto glass ceiling after releasing the beast...

Nintendooooooo............ what, what. Oh. Ahem. Xboxdooooomed

Going to play the devils advocate.. They could be winding down for this generation and planning ahead for the next generation. Much like Nintendo and the Wii U. Ride it the next couple of years with the Xbox One family, then launch Xbox 4.

Have Halo 6 as launch title :P

So the PS5 could potentially be another attempt at dominating the living room, like the PS3 with Blu-Ray, and the XB1 with "sports, tv, sports"? That does not bode well for the future of games.

If both MS and Sony have the same grand ambitions of doing more with their games division, than just games, then the next logical step would be to move towards "games/tv/movies as a service". So MS would try to get more people paying for XBox Live, and Sony would push the hell out of PS Now. Eventually you wouldn't be able to buy a game anymore, physically or digitally. Instead you would be paying a monthly fee to have access to said games in the same way that you pay a monthly fee to have access to other media. Except games are more costly to make, so the monthly fee would be much higher. Maybe $15 a month for the games, and $10 a month to play online. That way they'd be able to milk a good $300 a year from a consumer that only buys three games at $60 a year.

Why is every corperation's main strategy for profit to just screw the consumer over?

You are overly pessimistic in your post. I did mention a convergence box PS5 as a possibility, but it would take a high level of arrogance to make such a console. The PS4's success could lead down that road, but it's still only a remote possibility.

As for games as a service, that will be a gradual shift like sales of physical vs. digital copies. But I can't share your view here, because physical copies of games will continue to exist. If there's no reason to believe in an all-digital future, then there's even less of a reason to believe that there will be no game ownership whatsoever eventually.

I'm talking about the next 15 to 20 years. Obviously not going to happen overnight.

Their 1st party contente is lacking but they had some really titles coming to Xbox (would have been a lot worse without them.
Also, i think this is the first time in many years i see them going for diversity, at least in a meaningful way (the last night looks amazing!).

Honestly speaking, lack of 1st party efforts really hasn't been the number one reason for their number 2 spot in sales.

You clearly dont understand the purpose the Scorpio. Its a barrier to keep fans and 3rd party developers from completely abandoning XBOX. Not to show commitment.

Yes, because clearly people are abandoning it and the console misses so many third party games, lol.

Don't waste your time :) I think he is mixing personal hopes with reality :)

Looks like the 30M Xbox One sold (it does even better than the 360), the enormous amount of games (because do we care if someone else can play it on another device... a game is a game), the new Xbox One X, Xbox Play Anywhere, Xbox Live, Xbox GamePass, Xbox Backward compability for 360 and now the original Xbox, the Elite controller, Halo, Forza, Gears, Halo Wars, Crackdown, Sea of Thieves, Minecraft, ReCore, Ori, etc.. Microsoft is showing month after month their commitment for the pleasure of the Xbox enthusiasts.

But people who have no interrest in the Xbox (either haters or other console fans) are coming out with so many original readings and interpretations on what is going on and how the Xbox is declining and not doing well and doomed and the poor Xbox users are suffuring for not having the same exclusive games they have on their platform of choice and how much games must be Xbox "exclusives" only or it becomes not important at all... Look like they are the only one who really cares about that...
