Forums - Gaming - Just curious: Who here has bought The Orange Box?!

I received the PC version as a Christmas gift. I rented the PS3 version for three days a week prior to Christmas and I absolutely hated it. The PC version is the only version for me and the console version felt like it had broken controls.

For example, Portal felt much harder than it actually was and there is no way I could do the same things as a sniper on the PS3 version that I could on the PC (that goes for the other classes too).

Lastly, I would recommend to people that have never played these games before to play the original Half-Life. Obviously it'll look ugly considering it's graphics were new in like 1998, but it's still a good experience that I keep going back to from time to time. In fact, I let my room mate borrow my old version of Half-Life and even without the 'HD' models, he really enjoyed his time with it and it helps him play the games in the Orange Box. It's just too bad that he's playing on his Dell laptop and it's crappy 8600 mobile video card on Windows Vista and he's having driver problems (any solutions would be very helpful).

The PS3 version is the worst of all three versions. I am sure there is a large percentage of PS3 owners that own either a 360 or PC. For all those who bought The Orange Box, I would guess most of them bought it for one of the other platforms.

I did buy the X360 version, but after the  3 RROD, I did but a Ps3 with the orange box Ps3 version. Both version are almost identical.. all " huge  Difference " according to magazines, etc,  are liars.

I actually thought the controls were pretty good (for dual-analog) it was much easier to control than for example Resistance. I mean the mouse is of course far superior (Its simply THE control for FPS) but at least for campaign mode I didn't have any big complains. The controls didn't bother me the loading times did. (JC992000:The different loading times between PS3 and 360 are no lie)

PC Version. I've been switching from PC to console for COD4 and UT3 but Orange Box had to be on PC, Half Life 1 & 2 plus episodes are the best FPS ever IMHO so I stuck with my PC for it.

Mind you, given the Orange Box contains HL2, etc. I was very tempted to plump for it on PS3 but instead I lugged my HD TV up to my office and hooked up my PC for Episode 2 and Portal (I cannot tell you how amazing it looked on a HD TV with a PC resolution / speed, just wow).

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

For Portal, TF2, and a little bit of Episode 2, it felt like I was hitting a wall with the controls on the PS3 version. It's mainly because these are the games that I'd be playing on my PC. With Portal, I found it difficult to use the controls especially when going through portals because it readjusts your view so fighting that was pretty tough. With Episode 2, I found it hard to move around the way I usually do on the PC and dodging enemies and the environment felt a little more difficult that it could have been. With TF2, part of it probably had to do with the game just coming out when I rented it and I used to play TFC a lot so I knew what I was doing, but everybody was running around like chickens with their heads cut off so I could waste people as a soldier without any issue. However, not having total control with the mouse, moves like rocket jumping, turning quickly, and especially sniping were essentially broken for me.

Yes, the loading times on the PS3 were TERRIBLE. Usually when it comes to FPS games, I do a LOT of quicksaving and quickloading (platforming elements and such are usually the culprits). Sadly, I couldn't do that on the PS3's Orange Box because it was hardly accessable (hold Start to quicksave, but you have to navigate menu's to load that quicksave) and it would take like a minute just to load a save if you wanted to retry something compared to like 10 seconds or less on my PC.

I've really wanted to try to hook my PC up to our HDTV. Though I'm waiting until I could get a new video card with HDMI so I don't have to worry about wires as well as having an improved video card than what I currently have (7800gt) for better frame rates, though I do have HD-cables for outputting to an HDTV with my current video card.

Not to derail the current topic, but do you have COD4 on the PC and have you played both the PC and PS3 versions online? I ask this because while I found COD4 online to be fun, playing it on the PS3 felt like torture at times because of a lag delay and console controls. While I've gotten my fix by renting COD4 for a couple of weeks, I'd still like to maybe come back to it sometime, but I'd rather do it on the PC than the PS3 (or 360 for that matter).

I have Orange Box for the 360, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet! Same goes for Lost Planet.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.
