Forums - Nintendo - Need for Speed: Payback producer a big fan of Switch, but no current plans for the system

Need for Speed: Payback producer Marcus Nilsson is a big fan of Switch. When he’s traveling on flights, he plays Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But when it comes to actually supporting the system, his new game is unlikely to end up on the system.

GameSpot asked Nilsson about the possibility of a Switch version of Need for Speed: Payback at E3 2017. In response, he said:

“I love the Switch; I absolutely adore it. Would that be a platform that Need for Speed: Payback could run on? I don’t see why [not], but it’s not something we’re looking to at this very moment.”

At least he admits it could run on the system.

Any game with a good optimization or a build made especially for the system can run on the Switch, but the extra cost makes it very difficult to do.

I actually think this is the problem.
Maybe it could run some version of this game, but it would be a downgrade in many area's and perphaps alot of work to get it running, so they are simply skipping it.

Its PR talk though.

"switch is probably too weak to run it the way we want, but we cant say that"

Until Frostbite is ported over to the Switch. Don't expect any Frostbite powered games.

In-fact, if you bought the Switch or any Nintendo console for that matter in the hopes it was going to be a multi-platform powerhouse... Then you bought the incorrect system. That hasn't been Nintendo for a long time.

Frostbite though is an extremely scalable engine, there is no technical reason why it couldn't run on hardware as slow as the Switch.

Absolutely, but not being able to run the games is the usual go to excuse.

This is going to be a very common story going forward. It's just the way of things. One console won't fix 20 years of bad relations between Nintendo and third parties. Plus I imagine the Switch is a chore to port to with the docked/handheld functionality requirements. Developers can be confident significant downgrades won't be necessary for the docked version, but the handheld version opens a new can of worms.

I'm pretty sure that some other game developers have already said something very similar.

This is the nature of things, games being developed for a good chunk of time releasing in the nearby future wont be on the Switch due to several facts.

If the Switch continues to sell like hot cakes and software sales are good. We're gonna see more third party games.
