Forums - Gaming Discussion - Atari Box: New Console From Atari (RUMORED to be a Modern Console)

I'm thinking this is going to be an Ouya type thing. It isn't expensive to make a console with PS4 type power and if this turns out to be a modern console, that's what I think they'll do. They'll probably try to revive their old franchises and get multiplats.

I won't believe it until I see it.

Okay...you do know this is an actual Atari backed thing right? It's going to happen. But who knows, it might turn out to be garbage...or they might be coming back with a vengeance.

Yeah, if it happens it'll probably be like the Atari Flashback. There's almost no way that they're going to create a modern console.

Frogger and Space Invaders.

A lot of people are also unaware of the amazing computers too (Atari 520/1040 STE, STF, Mega ST and the Falcon) running the TOS (OS) and the GEM (Windows like interface). I have so many good memories of those computers and played a lot of games on it.

I had several of them and started to actually code my very first games on an Atari 520 STE :) Using GFA Basic and the GEM with Windows and button when I was something like 10 years old.  I had one Mega ST at some point with a wooping 20MB hard drive and it was awesome at that time.

And here a picture of the Mega ST I had with the hard drive (20MB) which is the bottom box behind the keyboard...

Good old time :)

I would love to see Atari in the hardware game again. Crossing my fingers for something cool coming out.

Maybe...but the console has USB ports and has applications for game developers. It's also rumored to have absolutely nothing to do with the 2600-Jaguar. It's not retrospective at all besides the wood paneling. I think a lot of us are just timid that a new challenger may enter the fray. I hate anything Atari after the 2600 but I'm still gonna give them a change

I thought atari died! Well if they bring out an updated "RUSH" series game, it's a buy from me!

ANDY MURRAY:- GRAND SLAM WINNER!

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

I have wanted Atari to return to a place of prominence in gaming, not necessarily as a console maker, just a player of some shape or form. But I can't be excited about this because I've paid too close attention to the company that owns the name the past several years. They're a mess, and there's no way they somehow found the resources necessary to make a viable new console, or even a Steam machine or something that could succeed where Ouya failed.

If they prove me wrong there'd be nobody more happy than me though.

Who owns the Atari name now? Is it a company with deep pockets?

No. It´s Infrogames.

In May 2009, Infogrames Entertainment SA, the parent company of Atari, and Atari Interactive, announced it would change its name to Atari SA.

In April 2010, Atari SA board member and former CEO David Gardner resigned. Original Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell joined the board as a representative for Blubay holdings.[45]

As of March 31, 2011, the board of directors consisted of Frank Dangeard, Jim Wilson, Tom Virden, Gene Davis and Alexandra Fichelson.[3]

On January 21, 2013, Atari, Atari Interactive, Humongous, and California US Holdings (collectively, the "Companies") filed petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.[46] All three Ataris emerged from bankruptcy one year later and the entering of the social casino gaming industry with Atari Casino.[47] Frederic Chesnais, who now heads all three companies, stated that their entire operations consist of a staff of 10 people.[48]

On June 22, 2014, Atari announced a new corporate strategy that would include a focus on "new audiences", specifically "LGBT, social casinos, real-money gambling, and YouTube"

If they are in the casino business, this could be a money laundry scheme like the Gismodo was for the russian mob...

The plot thickens.
