Forums - Gaming Discussion - Atari Box: New Console From Atari (RUMORED to be a Modern Console)

With a name like that, it sounds more like a NES Mini situation here, rather than a new console.

Who owns the Atari name now? Is it a company with deep pockets?

Nope, not even close.  They were bankrupt just a few years ago and fighting with their then-parent company, trying to spin off with the IP that were still under the Atari name.  It's an amazingly convoluted history and many people don't even like connecting the current company called Atari with the historical one because of all the times the properties and trademarks changed hands, it's hard to draw a straight line back to Pong.

They're in a constant struggle to merely suvive.  Recent years have seen them try to make quick cash on every property they have--including Alone In the Dark, Haunted House, Asteroids and Roller Coaster Tycoon--with barebones low-budget games that often don't even resemble their original franchises.  Can't imagine sales were good enough on those to make them flush with cash.  So unless they've made more money on "social casino gaming" than I would expect, or the purported sale of the movie rights to Asteroids was truly lucrative, I'm thinking they don't have deep pockets.

There's also THIS, which would be the ultimate troll if it's what they're talking about.

Aparently they are working with casinos now, so, like the Gismodo, this could be a real thing, a vehicle to write off BIG losses for the right people...

Living in Brazil we see this kind of things being done by our president, governors, senators, representatives...

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

That would be disappointing, but, given the lack of respect the company has already shown toward the history and importance that this brand once had, it wouldn't be too surprising.

But even that could mean a console could indeed be released. If this is not a unfunny joke for Funny-Or-Die or some other idiotic outlet like that.

There was an unaccounted for AMD semi-custom chip as of last year. At the time many people thought it was for NX/Switch, but Switch ended up using Nvidia Tegra instead of AMD. Guessing this new Atari console is that missing AMD semi-custom chip.

Could have been the Scorpio too, no?

lmfao, you got half of it right. Now we wait and see what happens in the next 5 years.

This has to be a joke

Heavily doubt it's anything but the Atari mini. If Atari ever wanted to get back into the game. They need to have some successful games first as a 3rd party publisher. Otherwise another Atari system would bomb really fast.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true
