Forums - Microsoft - MS has cleared the path for their E3

They did remove pretty much all the land mines ahead of time. Other than the fact the Scorpio will still have no exclusives.

So even at $400 they still have to make a good argument to buy that than a cheaper one. If a ps4 slim /xbox one S cost around $240/$250 now - they will definitely cost less in October (or November/December).

Meaning even at $400 they STILL have to make the argument that the "power" alone is worth $150 more. Possibly even $200 by the end of the year.

The path may have no bombs, but it certainly isn't clear.

Isnt that also removed too? We already know it ownt have exclusives before E3 so people cant really comnplain about it.

Was it? Or are you counting VR ones that are simply exclusive due to the lack of hardware in the xbox one/s?

There wont be VR at E3 for Xbo platforms so we probably wont know about Scopio exclusives(which will probably also be on windows 10) til early next year.

It seems obvious to me, that in the last 6 months MS has really cleared the path for having a good clear message at their E3 conference  Let's look at what they have done:

1. Released the detailed specs of the Scorpio

a. This allows all of the talk after E3 to be about the product, not the specs

2. Cancelled a number of games that people were waiting for

a. This allows all of the negative press about this to have died down

b. This also allows the information regarding other games to be the focus

3. Announced VR is not coming to the XB1 this year

a. Instead of everyone talking about what is missing from their E3 show, they eliminate the talk before it even starts

b. Again, people stay focused on what they are bringing this year, not what isn't coming

4. Totally landed the "Premium Price" message to gamers with people think $499-$699

a. If the rumor is true at $399, people will be dancing in the streets if it is priced this way

b. Now, the price seems reasonable if not cheap for what you get

1.  And yet, I bet there will be a lot of talk about specs at E3.  And probably Windows, too.

2.  This more likely has caused a bad stigma around the XBO, calling back to the last years of Xbox and 360, where MS left their consumers without exclusives.  It's why the XBO is down YOY, while the PS4 is not.  And this month the XBO is not going to be close to the PS4 like it was last year, instead most likely continuing the 100K+ gaps every month the PS4 has enjoyed in the US this year.

3.  This is actually a very bad thing.  It means that, yet again, MS will be behind in a market that is already defining itself.  Sony is also looking to be the top contender in that market, unless you include Gear VR, though I don't really since it is something you just slide your phone into.  Still, if you do include it, Sony wasn't that far behind them.  Which is damn good, since the PS VR costs $300 more than a Gear VR headset.  And this will allow another year for Sony to show its dominance in VR headset market and to get prices down.  So, I don't know why MS thinks they will find much success waiting another year and then competing against a $299 PS VR headset.

4.  This is just a rumor.  Many think that it is just pointing out the Scorpio's launch date, which seems more plausible to me.  Still, even if it does launch for $399, what if Sony goes aggressive and drops the Pro to $299 in Sept?  I think it's already safe to assume Sony is going to have the most to show off at E3 this year, especially since they have all the big marketing deals, now.  I think MS is going to be focusing mostly on how powerful the Scorpio is and maybe show off some games we already know about.  Considering they cancelled a bunch of exclusives because didn't want to spend the extra money to develop them, I don't think there are going to be many surprises in that department.

Yeah, which is why the "no exclusives" thing is a problem.

If they could show off their VR (wireless,or wired) and let's say a good 3 to 5 games then they could at least sell themselves as the "VR of your dream".

Without any until 2018 (probably around E3?) they lose a selling point.

I've already seen several posts that were like "Scorpio +VR = dream machine" or a variation of that. It would give the Scorpio an edge. A selling point.

More than just "we have power" it would be "we have the power for VR".

Depends on what Microsoft is going for. As a consumer that doesnt want to spend thousands of dollars on a PC that wants an xbox console they can get the xb1s or scorpio. If they want something that future proof and powerful that can run 4k games then they will get a Scorpio(as long as its under $45 imo). If the consumer just wants a console that can play games for the next few years they will just buy the XB1S. I imagine Microsoft plans to make the Scorpio the mainstream xbox and release the scorpio 2 while dropping support for the XB1S sometime around 2020/2021.

So according to your 2nd point, cancelling games = good advertising ?!

I can't fathom how you see this as a good thing.

He means that if MS didnt announce that the game was canceled people might ask "why asnt scalebound at e3?"

I agree, they removed all the big landmines before E3 so there will be a lot less negativity about those issues when they actually do have their conference

Are you serious? PS4 has been gapping at 100K in NPDs?

Yep.  Some months have been better.  It now sits with half a million gap for 2017 in just 4 months.  For June, I expect another 100K+ gap.

You make some good points. They have basically cleared up all of their 90 minute conference for games (maybe 5-10 minutes spent revealing Scorpio's name, design, release date, and price). Rather that will mean longer demos for already announced games and 3rd party marketing deal games, or lots of new game announces remains to be seen (hopefully the latter). I also agree that MS may have been purposefully misleading us with the "premium price" messaging, so that a $399 price will be a 2013-esque mic drop moment for them.

I expect about half an hour or so dedicated to scorpio. The amount of press there, they're going to want to really show of how much grunt the box has in front of them and the millions around the world. It would be a missed opportunity if they didn't. They'll probably have a run down of features too. They've taken a long time with this console and are ahead of schedule.
