...You see how you proved my point, right?

Being a hardcore fighting fan has nothing to do with people being okay with a lack of content/story mode.

A lack of content is something that can be easily remedied these days, and if a game is truly unique and enjoyable then fans will find ways to get more mileage out of it. That said, not every game is going to be a Splatoon and catch lightning with the fans either. I will wait a few months to make my decision on ARMS: if I see that people are still talking about it and we're seeing a competitive and pop culture scene develop like we did with Splatoon then I will have to call the game a hit.

Even if ARMS doesn't become a hit then I think it is likely that it will at least be like Pikmin where it will have a lot of love from a small group of fans. All-in-all, it doesn't seem like a bad game.

Opencritic now has it listed as 79/100. Sub 80 scores on all three aggregate sites. I think we can consider this one to be a bit of a failure.

I'm not a fan of Arm's art style at all. It looks like all the characters are ripped out of a PBS kid's show about superheroes that tell you not to smoke cigarettes. The game lacks the originality and coolness factor of Splatoon's art style.
