Please don't think of this as a deliberate slam against Sony but I think PSN cards doing so well might have something to do, at most in part, with Sony not having the best reputation when it comes to storing personal information. ( http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-04-26-sony-admitted-the-great-psn-hack-five-years-ago-today ) Sony was once targeted by North Korea itself. Not many corporations can say they've been targeted by a rogue state. Of course it also helps that PS4 is the best-selling console this gen. That should go without saying.
Speaking of Disgaea, I hope Disgaea 5's sales are good. It's a niche franchise so I don't think it needs to have huge sales to be a success. |
It might be a factor but probably not one that's more meaningful than lots of others. Otherwise, it would be hard to explain the fact that Xbox cards dominated the Amazon charts last gen with PSN cards not that far behind.
My own personal belief is that many parents do not want to enter credit card information into a video game system they don't control, plus you have situations like college dorms or shared apartments where it doesn't feel safe. I think it's more of a bunch of different life situations all contributing.
