No like Final Fantasy they are all completely seperate whilst keeping common elements throughoutthe series. 

You can jump into any of the Disgaea games blind and all you are really missing out on would be some throwaway references for longtime fans.

Well, he'll be missing Laharl-sama greatness and the power of Love, the invicible gear and the mighty prism rangers, the evil academy and pringer x, the sardine addiction and rule number #1, and so, so, so much more, but nothing on D5, yes.

I definitely want to try them all!

I wish there were more hours in the day...
