There are many well constructed arguments that go against how I feel on a subject and these should be rewarded, this is how one promotes good discussion, online or otherwise. |
Isn't that just a matter of perspective though? I know some sites literally call their upvote/downvote buttons "agree" and "disagree" respectively. If VGC doesn't categorise them as anything else and let's people come up with their own interpretation then why can't they assume that's what they mean?

Well, I suppose, but it can still become a problem, especially on sites with more bias leaning towards one side, it helps create an echochamber. And on the other hand; I try not to upvote posts or comments that have a core point I agree with if this is poorly presented or rudely put. A lot of good points go unnoticed among hate and foul language and personal insults.
Even if vgchartz were to clarify what they mean with "upvote" and "downvote", its still won't stop a lot users and guests from doing what they always do, with an obvious agenda, of course. I think this is why they've always hesitated when people ask for a "like" and "dislike" button on posts, it can quickly become a mudslinging contest, userbases defend their own even when they're being stupid and attack the "opposition" even when they make sense. Personally, I've always had an ambigous attitude towards weighting systems, it works fairly well in some cases and then not at all in other cases.
