6 million.

No. 3DS will be Nintendo's lowest selling handheld, even though it doesn't deserve to be. Handheld gaming is just losing popularity.

It's actually more popular than ever, the reason the 3DS sales were down is because iPhone, iPad, and Android have become the main choice for handheld gaming.

It is a similar situation with the whole "crash" of the video game industry back in the 80s, it didn't actually occur. What happened is that the platform of choice for video games had transferred over to more PC-like consoles such as the Commodore 64. Why would people play on a stinky old Atari system when C64 was able to do all of that, and a whole lot more, and with much better graphics and interface. Then the NES came out, and it was kind of like the Wii of its day, cheap, less powerful than the competition that came out at that time, a more simplistic and intuitive interface, and it won.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

"Handheld Console Gaming" then.

I doubt it. But I do hope Nintendo comes out with a new dedicated handheld because I feel the Switch is a poor substitute. Don't get me wrong, I think Switch is amazing and I love mine but as a dedicated handheld? No way. The magic of those things is missing entirely for me. There's just something... not there.

How about the return of the Gameboy line? No gimmicks, just a bad ass HD screen with two analog sticks and buttons. Think of it like a mini Switch without removable sides and it's own OS and library. That would be awesome.

Actually I saw many people stop using 3DS/Vita after they got Switch, and people that using Switch mostly in handheld mode.

Why they would another platform with own OS and own games to compete with Switch!? That would be everything against Nintendo is planned and doing, things like integrated their handheld and home console software and hardware divisions, having one unified platform, fact they will support only one platform instead two totally different platforms like before. What Nintendo will do is to release Switch Mini, smaller and cheaper Switch with stronger battery just for handheld play, that of course will have same OS and will play same games like Switch, and that's totally make sense, its crazy even to think they will release difrent handheld platform that they would need to support when they can just release Switch Mini and continue supporting just one platform.

This is an anecdotal non-statement to the extreme.

Actually I saw plenty of posts like those of Switch users on Neogaf.

If they would just stock it!

This. They could have gotten a lot more systems sold these holydays if they had seen the hype coming and had increased production in time with pokemon SuMo releasing. It was obvious it would do well, the 3DS baseline along with the x&y and or&as games had already been increased for months before SuMo even released, because of Pokemon Go. They just didn't prouce/stock enough.

Their prediction for this year might be a tad on the low side as well, so lets hope they can actually ship the damn thing. 80m+ is going to be tough to reach either way, but if they can get the price down and really reach into that low end segment it might leg it out.

I had hoped that, but I don't think it'll have the longevity anymore. Assuming Nintendo's 6m forecast will become reality, that would put it at 72m next year, still 10m away from 82m (it'll need to beat it). Optimistically the 3DS would need another 3 years, probably 4 years, to reach the number.

Though of course maybe due to the N2DSXL sales will actually beat the forecast like last year's did, which means it could get closer. This is a wildcard though, I'll stay with my stance that the 3DS probably doesn't have enough time left to reach the GBA.
