PS     FY2000/2001 FROM FYQ2 ( ps2 was released in the end of FY99 in Japan ) 2001/2002 2002/2003 2003/2004 2004/2005 TOTAL+LT
Sales     8.71M 7.40M 6.79m 3.31m 2.77m 28.5M+74m

Fiscal year starts on April and ends in March of the next year*

PS1 was released in late FY95/96 at 299$ ( but FY94/95 in Japan ) , the price dropped to 199$ after 8 months, PS1 price was falling every year  by 30$ on average ( Sony other divsions were so strong then that they had a huge leeway for slashing the price ) to get at only 99$ by the time of PS2 arrival with the release of PSONE ( slim version of ps1 ) though ! In the first half of 2002 ps1 price decreased to the overly low 49$... It successor the ps2 had the same initial price with it and 200$ difference with it the time it came to market..

SIGNATURE FEATURE OF PS1: CD MUSIC PLAYER.

5 years of sales after its successor release.

* There aren't sales data for the last FY of ps2, it was combined with ps3 shipments, ( an aggreagate of 16.5m with the LTD sales of PS2 at 155.1 and PS3 at 63.90M  ), since vgc has ps2 at 157.68

edit: ( For an inexplicable reason vgc has ps2 sales in Japan at 23.18m while we have official sales number of 21.83m, media create ) So, 156.3m LT?, final shipment 1.3m?  Since ps3 lifetime sales are 87.4m and shipment tally was 80m  as of November 2013, from the the aggregate of 16.5m PS2+PS3 shipments for FY12/13, less than A million is for the PS2

PS2 was released in  FY2000 in the whole world ( except japan when it came out the last month of previous  FY ) for 299$, sony cut the price in May 2002 in order to match the price of Gamecube, 199$. By the time that ps3 was released, ps2 was being sold for 129$ and sony lowered its price for the last time in 2009, to reach 99$. Ps3 initial price was 599$, +300 from both ps1 and ps2, its price between half 2007 and first 5 months 2009 was 399/499$ , it was reduced to 299$ with introduction of ps3 slim in may 2009. The woes of ps3 regarding its price favored ps2 to a  significant extend, plus that ps2  a good share of casual gamers buying it when it became dirty cheap, not according to me but sony itself and its marketing plan...

SIGNATURE FEATURE OF PS2: DVD MOVIE PLAYER

7 years of sales after the launch of its successor.

PS3 FY2013/2014 ( FROM FY Q3 when PS4 was launched ) FY14/15 FY15/16 FY16/17* TOTAL+LT
  4.1M 3.10m *NO DATA (maybe 500k)  *NO DATA  2019 Edit:87.4m  79.5m as of 2013, +7.9m after PS4 release

 * Sony halted ps3 shipments report in 2015   like they did with psv, you can guess why!

*Sony has stated that they would discontinue ps3 in 2017 ( they had already done that in ROW in late 2015 ) , it seems like they have, consecuently 4 years of sales after the successor release!

By the time that PS4 came, ps3 price was 269$ thanks to the release of the super slim model in 2012.

Sony never really dropped the price again, probably manufacturing cost was prohibiting it or sony wanted to keep making a considerable profit on hardware given the early years of ps3 and the fact of ps4  cannibalizing it ( even though the released the 12gb version of ps3 super slim at 199$)! They sold a console at the exorbitant 599$ with extortionate manufacturing cost, ( blinded by the vast success of ps2 and wrongly hoping that blue-ray player would be as much as attactive  was dvd player features of ps2. They expected to sell 150m faster than ps2 ) , undergoing the whopping almost 200$ loss on every unit sold  for one year and a half, while many other divisions where in the red.     In mid 2008 the manufacturing cost became the same with price  (400$  and 499$) , ergo no money loss ( till discounting them ) ! PS3  ( 2009 ) slim which phased out some costly components of the previous model cost to build was down by 70% over the og ps3's in 2008, i.e 240$, they were earning 59$ dollars on each unit sold.

Conclusions:  Most of the legs of ps1 and ps2 are from when they hit 49$ and 99$ price point respectively, also ps2 legs have been benefited greatly by the trouble of ps3 anent its price, hence ps1 onwards sales are more impressive than ps2 in my opinion! As for ps3  it had no chance at 200-250$ to keep selling very well following PS4 arrival...

Apropos, sony is replacing their console every 6 years, therefore ps5 should land late 2019 ( edit: late 2020 eventually ) .

I will be updating that thread when PS4 will be succeeded by ps5 for comparison with previous playstation HC!

PS4 FY2020/2021 ( FROM FY Q3 when PS5 was launched ) FY2021/22 FY22/23 FY23/24 TOTAL+LT

I was one of those 6.79 million people that got a PS1 in the 2002/03 fiscal year! I loved that console to death.

Naturally, ps3 would have sold much better if it had followed a steady drop in price after ps4. I guess it's kinda a WiiU-gamepad situation where manufacturing for the product is too specific for the price to drop (It would actually get more expensive quite faster to make them)

I doubt this will happen to ps4 since I guess components are much more standard

A console as a gift ( your parents? you were just four years old then ) , howbeit it was being sold for only 49$ in that time frame, cheaper than a pair of simple nike sport shoes! :)

THE  PSONE ( PLAYSTATION SLIM )

It was a Christmas present from my grandma. I mainly remember playing Crash Bandicoot 2 when I first got it.

Yeah it could had another 10m sales and approach 100m.

What's the lowest price that you expect ps4 to hit, without a damaging money loss of course?

I bought a new PSOne for 50 bucks in 2004. Yay me! What do I win?
