Forums - Nintendo - Reggie on why the New 2DS XL exists, 90% of 3DS unit sales have been with stereoscopic 3D

They should have done this a long time ago.

"What that tells me is that for the vast majority of consumers, 3D is an important feature."

This is patently false in my observations. I have a large number of friends and family that own a 3DS (mostly XL) and NONE of them ever use the 3D functionality. All the sales between the 2DS and 3DS line demonstrate is that most people prefer the clamshell form function for a variety of reasons. I bet at $50 less, the new 2DS will outsell its 3DS competitors if it had normalized color options. Its just a superior option.

Shrugs, I always use the 3D. It's not the greatest thing ever, but it's not like it's terrible or something. If you bought a 3DS you paid for that 3D screen, you might as well use it.

Anyways this new model is for 6 year olds. Who really gives that much of a crap. Let the 6 year olds play on the 3DS/2DS for the next 3-4 years.

+1 for almost always using the 3D.

People like to slam Nintendo and the 3DS in particular for "gimmicks". As of Sony's last Annual IR meeting though, they hard around 21M PS+ subscribers and 40M PS4s sold. Given that some of those plus subscribers could be Vita or PS3 owners, that means that less than half of PS4 users were likely + subscribers.

It can probably be said that a majority of PS4 users rarely or never play games online. Online gaming is not a gimmick though.

We'll never know what things might have been like had the 3DS just been the DS 2 or something. I think you can make the case though, that the stereoscopic 3D was a selling point and it helped differentiate the 3DS from the DS.

I don't think there would have been any difference if they hadn't really used the 3D feature or not. The main impact on handheld sales last cycle was clearly smartphone/tablets, the screen could've been 4D and it wouldn't have mattered, lol.

The Cadillac of handheld gaming.

e=mc^2

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

I think the 3D looks amazing. Plus, after using it for awhile, you get used to playing games at double the resolution, and then when turned off, things start to look dull.

Does anyone think the price of a regular 2ds will go down due to this announcement?

No. The regular 2DS is already very cheap.

Thank you.
