People like to slam Nintendo and the 3DS in particular for "gimmicks". As of Sony's last Annual IR meeting though, they hard around 21M PS+ subscribers and 40M PS4s sold. Given that some of those plus subscribers could be Vita or PS3 owners, that means that less than half of PS4 users were likely + subscribers.

It can probably be said that a majority of PS4 users rarely or never play games online. Online gaming is not a gimmick though.

We'll never know what things might have been like had the 3DS just been the DS 2 or something. I think you can make the case though, that the stereoscopic 3D was a selling point and it helped differentiate the 3DS from the DS.

I don't think there would have been any difference if they hadn't really used the 3D feature or not. The main impact on handheld sales last cycle was clearly smartphone/tablets, the screen could've been 4D and it wouldn't have mattered, lol.
