Good to know. The amount of jokes in the original were just slightly below my level of hatred as to where I could still enjoy it, but if they've increased the cringey jokes I guess it'll be worthwhile to skip this one.

Can't say I agree with OP here. As someone who liked the original but couldn't see past that as a popcorn flick with plenty of cringy moments (i.e. didn't like it as much as everyone else did), I just watched Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and enjoyed it plenty. It really has some juvenile and atrocious jokes (there's even a vomit scene for the lulz, for fuck sake), but I never felt like the movie overused them (it really tones down over the original imo, which is a good thing), and it actually dwelves more into drama and emotional moments pushing aside stupid humor and the likes. It really caught me by surprise (probably because of my very low expectations), and I would seriously encourage watching it.

what about if they're good jokes?  Never got why joke level in a comedy/space opera is a problem

That's subjectivity for you. I don't think the majority of jokes Marvel or most super hero movies go for are good. They are all extremely cringey and juvenile to me. I would say though that the first Guardians of the Galaxy had better overall joke writing than most other super hero movies and the Guardians of the Galaxy series is definitely built to be more comedy-driven, unlike other movies where it's shoe-horned in to appeal to mass demographics more.

Well, they are shoe horned in DC movies, but Guardians is silly to begin with. Like Justice League America, with Guy Gardner. It is very comedic even in comic book form

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Well now I'm confused.

Also, reply to your post on my wall, damn it.

Just go see it. Trust James Gunn.

Remember SUPER and  SLITHER.

I adored the first one and was really happy to see this one was only ~10-15 points behind the original on RottenTomatoes last time I checked... Coming that close with a sequel when much of the fascination with the original was due to how unique it seemed suggests to me that it's still a heck of a lot of fun.

I think it's safe to say that Guardians of the Galaxy is in my top 3 or so films of the past decade; it's eminently rewatchable too :D

Well I guess we'll just settle with 2 threads, then.

I agree with you. I mean, obviously I like both of these movies way more than you do, but the things you pointed out are true. Vol. 2 shines over its predecessor because of the drama and character development, and even though the humor is more childish (crap jokes, dick jokes, puking, it really has it all), it somehow still feels natural.

Sorry, didn't see your link. xD (I might as well reply here already, I guess)

One thing I really liked is the amount of Yondu screentime. Felt he was an interesting character on the original, and really liked everytime he was here onscreen, particulary that psycopathic sequence of Yondu killing everyone on the ship. And he really feels connected, you know, instead of being some overused joke cliché like in the original. In fact this is something I can say for the whole movie: it had such a huge amount of characters and they really tried their best giving equal screentime to each other. As a downside, Gamora really doesn't do anything at all in the whole movie (aside finishing her own personal arc with his sister), but I really preferred it this way. It really struck a sweet balance with Quill, Drax, Groot, Racoon, Ego, Nebula and even Yondu's subordinate, Broker. In fact I was really "happy" in a sense that the movie had the balls to leave the final fifteen minutes of pure emotional ride, and not lessen it or cheapen with any out of place joke. I'm cool with credit sequences being goofy, because they could respect that. Not like the original, where like Groot dies and thirty seconds later you have Quill dancing.

well I haven't seen the movie I was merely questioning judging it based on sheer volume.  The jokes could be bad and your concern would be justified.

I disagree about Gamora, I thought she was far more interesting this time and had an actual personality and sort of role within the team, whereas in the first movie she was the least interesting guardian by far. Also, pretty sure you meant Kraglin, right? Broker wasn't even in this movie. As for the amount of characters, I think it's really interesting. The first movie had 5 main characters, and loads of side characters that showed up here and there - but in Vol. 2, you have pretty much 9 main characters (which is indeed a lot), but there are almost no side characters at all, and there's not even much of a story, so the reason it works is because the movie dedicates itself wholly to fleshing out these 9 characters. (talk about overusing a word, damn.)

Edit: I just saw your edit, gonna move there. xD

Really liked the first one, so hearing Vol 2 is different isn't a good sign. I'm pretty easy to please, but fingers crossed.
