The first movie had 5 main characters, and loads of side characters that showed up here and there - but in Vol. 2, you have pretty much 9 main characters (which is indeed a lot), but there are almost no side characters at all, and there's not even much of a story, so the reason it works is because the movie dedicates itself wholly to fleshing out these 9 characters.
