Forums - Sony - PS4 Still beating PS2, launch aligned

Its ahead based on initial release date but PS2 was only available in Japan for about 8 months. PS2 is pretty far ahead when looking at it from a region to region standpoint.

PS2 released March 2000 in Japan & Oct/Nov 2000 in America/PAL regions. Here is the breakdown per region in the same time frame.

Japan as of March 2003-12.70

America as of March 2004-29.53

PAL as of March 2004-24.79

Total-67.02

Regardless, excellent sales for PS4!!!!

-There will very likely be a Digital Only PS4, and yes a PS4 Premium.
-$149.99 base price in holiday 2019, with a $99.99 digital only edition.
-PS4 will continue to be supported well after the PS5 launches, whether that be in 2019 or 2024.

You say the strangest things.

And the PS2 had several years in a row over 20 million sales, let's see if the PS4 can match that... It has zero chance of selling anywhere near PS2 numbers, anyone who still goes on about that has very little understanding of how the modern market works.

Ah I had took launch aligned as regionally launched align and so assumed the staggered PS2 launch were taken into account.

Yepp, and it should not fall behind. With mostly standard tech, the move to digital, the revenue from PS, and yearly revisions to hardware (Some at an internal level only), PS4 should reach price levels we have not seen since PS2 also.

Some things that I see happening to keep PS4 ahead of PS2

-I fully expect PS4 to $249.99 by this holiday with deals that go below $199.99.
-I also believe Sony will continue to shick the PS4 APU at every possible die shrink going forward, so we could see PS4 and PS4 Pro on 10nm, 7nm, and 3nm before production is ended.
-There will very likely be a Digital Only PS4, and yes a PS4 Premium.
-Due to the above I expect a $199.99 base price in holiday 2018, and a $149.99 base price in holiday 2019, with a $99.99 digital only edition.
-PS4 will continue to be supported well after the PS5 launches, whether that be in 2019 or 2024.
-PS4 is Sonys door into the OS and Ecosystem battle, so it will be pushed like no other PlayStation in history, as the entire future of the company rides on its ability to get as many people as possible into the Sony ecosystem.
-Eventually all Sony devices will be built from the same DNA, thus making every sony product a PlayStation eventually.

Sonys not going to compete with an operating system now, and probably never unless the idea of going out of business sounds good. It takes years of iteration from literally the worlds biggest companies to make an OS. Sorry, but Sony can't compete against Apple, Google, and Ms in that regard. Not gonna happen and it doesn't need to happen. It's already remarkable enough that PlayStation is basically Linux gaming.

It's not going to beat it though. I know the evidence says otherwise, but remember it was the early to late 2000's PS2 was the cheapest DVD player on the market. I know a lot of family members that had one just to act as a DVD player. Although PS4 does Blu Ray, the demand for it isn't as high due to streaming services like Netflix. I think 95-100M LT, no way it's getting past that tbh.

PS4 is just a beast

Next step: beat Wii

I thought 95% of the people who cared accepted before the start of this gen that nothing will dethrone Ps2.... Possibly ever d: nothing from this gen will at least (that's a home console) d:

The PS2 had legs that he PS4 simply won't have. It'll fall off eventually.

Pretty much everyone thought it would've already fallen off by now. This gen can get interesting yet.

100M is all but garunteed

Ps2 didn't have to compete against tablets and smartphones as gaming formats.....

ps4 is a media hub in addition to a gaming console so it has that over the ps2 sort of(ps2 had the whole DVD thing going for it too tho)....

it could exceed 100 M but getting to

ps2 figures is a hard thing to do

mM

Nothing will ever beat the ps2.

But analyst said this gen will be the worst and starts the death of consoles.

Ps4 can definitely sell about 100-110 mill, something almost noo gaming system will ever reach.
