Forums - Nintendo - Straight to the point reviews #3: Kamiko - Announced for West April 27!

PROS

+ It's 5 bucks. You probably spent more on lunch today.

+ Presentation of the game is charming. Vibrant, crisp, and lovingly 8bit, and like most modern 8bit games a little more is done so that things that could not be done or done well in actual 8bit games look nice here. It also helps that the game has a nice art direction as well. Music is good, nothing super memorable but enough to be catchy while playing.

+ There are 3 playable ladies in the game and they are just variations of Link - Sword,Bow and Boomerang. Other factors are range, attack speed, power, and charge move but all play the same otherwise. They also kind of feel like make shift difficulty levels: Sword maiden is the balance(easy mode), Bow maiden is the longest range but slow attack speed (hard), and Boomerang maiden is the most powerful, but untill that boomerang comes back your stuck with a whimpy knife (medium).

+ Kamiko is not about beating the game, but how fast can you beat it. You have a mission of lighting 4 shrines in each of the 4 zones and the only thing standing in your way are enemies and enviornmental puzzles. The puzzles are very simplistic, the enemies are simplistic, even the bosses are simplistic but that is because they are suppose to be. The game does not bog down the frantic pace with difficult bosses or long puzzles, but instead task you with finding the fatest route to getting the job done while balancing fighting (you replenish SP by killing enemies; you need SP to open chest and light shrines) and getting a move on.

CONS

- Could have done with a couple more zones. Nothing about the game looks like it would have taken more than a few weeks to do so.

- Outside of health and SP upgrades, there are no power ups of any sort. I understand why, but how about when at max health we get a power boost or something? Would encourage not only playing fast but not getting hurt.

- No online leaderboards! After you beat the game you are given a total time and a breakdown of time by stages. Would be great to compare times with other players. My fastest time is 19'03, is that  super fast? I got a gold trophy but its very generous. Nothing to compare with.

You should buy Kamiko with the mindset that it is something you are going play and replay to master not just to beat and set it down. For 5 bucks I think the concept is enough to be entertaining for a while.

Kamiko, the new arcade-like action game from Fairune developer Skipmore, will launch for Switch in the west on April 27 for $4.99 / £4.49 / €4.99, publisher Flyhigh Works announced.

Here’s an overview of the game, via Nintendo:

Wield your weapon bestowed by the gods, and open the gates between worlds!

Kamiko is a game styled around Japanese Shinto beliefs.

Fight as priestesses called “Kamiko” and battle against demons while solving puzzles to make your way through the stages.

Look no further if you are looking for an arcade action game with a twist!

Each stage has several Torii (gates) which are magically sealed.

Find a way to break all the seals to make your way to the stage boss.

Another fun and easy original created by indie games developer Skipmore.

Watch a Japanese overview trailer below.

Also, I visited this thread earlier and I don't think the "Announced for West April 27!" was there. Was that part appended at a later time?

It was already playable in English, so I didn't wait for it to come West.  Downloaded it from the Japan eshop last week.

And, I agree with Xxain's review.  It's a nice retro-inspired action/puzzle game with levels that are well-suited for the Switch's portability.  I've been playing it in the park while walking my dog in the afternoons.  At $5, it's got more going for it than against it.  I recommend it as well.
