Forums - Gaming - SJW: Most Abused Term Ever?

I think it's silly to suggest that adding any non-white or non-male character to a game is SJW-pandering, even though there are some legitimate cases of silly agendas being put before other aspects of games.

SJW was clearly designed to be the mirror image of "bigot".

It's supposed to a 1 word dismissal with which you stigmatize certain position without having to offer an actual rebuttal to them on the grounds that "that position upsets me so much that I just don't have to respond to it".

I fully agree, and I think it is basically an attempt to treat anything different as a negative. It is basically a way to dismiss something, I seen it in this thread and I say this generally from anti-social justice stand point (with that said, I am also very much against the opposite side as well). Most people abuse the word without merit and with that present no real conversation.

The same could be said on the flip side of that with people who falsely label anyone that disagrees with them as a sexist, racist or anything they say as hate speech to shut them up.

I personally like SJWs because they're the best marketing that libertarianism and conservatism could ask for.

SJW is not a mockery of progressive ideals.

It is someone so attached to their ideals they have become detached from reality or perhaps from actual or real injustices of the world.

If a black women complains of racism, people wont call her a SJW.

When a white women who comes from a privileged household throws a fit that Yoga is cultural appropriation, that is a SJW in a negative sense.

You explained that well.

Pretty much sums up the modern day American Democratic party and most mainstream media these days as well..

Well Star Wars did indeed pick a female lead for its movies for a reason not story related at all. It also wasn't for SJW reasons, but purely for money reasons.

Why is it pandering for Star Wars movies to have a female lead, but NOT pandering for them to have male leads? You see the self-serving double-standard here?

Yep, all the words people are using against each other are becoming so overused and abused as to how/when they are used that I worry they're losing the importance they should be given as a consequence of it. Words like SJW, racist, misogynist, etc are being thrown around so easily and there are extremes of people who are using this to their advantage to just call anyone they don't like these things even if there's nothing supporting it just to make them look bad. We should all be fighting against people who are actually things such as racist or misogynistic and I worry it will become increasingly harder to tell who is actually those things versus who is just getting called that out of nowhere with how this has been going.

And i'll never understand how people can see a woman in any capacity and somehow claim that has anything to do with being an "SJW". Like, did women just not exist for these people before somehow and them showing up is somehow different than what has been normal for ages now?

Edit: I'm editing this comment to rewrite it as to better accurately portray what I meant to say at the time, as the original was poorly written.

I thought "SJW" was "Shonen Jump Weekly"

Interesting how people who do use the term SJW don't think it's overused, while other terms that people have probably accused them of are considered by them overused.

Also, not surprised by the generalization found in this very thread. Ironic, but unsurprising.

I vote "misogynist".

I think it's to the point now that simply disagreeing with a female can earn you that label.

Sounds to me like you hate women. Why else would you disagree with them.

Why do you hate women?

No, but ...

Dang it, can't fight that logic.

I once got into a big fight with my sister because she kept hogging two parking spots, thus forcing me to park out in the yard where it was pitch dark by the time I returned from work.  Somehow, in a way I still don't understand, she turned that into, "you have issues with women."  I will never forget that, though now it's kind of amusing.  I wish I'd thought of something witty back then, like, "only the ones that are inconsiderate assholes like you."

W-wow. This story triggers me without even being present for it.

I think the best response would be to rent a tow truck and give her a super special spot at the bottom of nearest body of water.

Just kidding...probably.
