It's possible to hookup an external GPU via USB-C/Thunderbolt to a laptop. There's actually a lot of those out in the marketplace.
I don't see why that couldn't be done with the Switch. The only challenge would be in making in small enough and with enough cooling power - which would be rather easy if you simply have an extra 1-2 Tegra X1s in there.
It's a clear winning proposition. Nintendo gets more 3rd party support. Publishers get to put games on the best-selling platform. nVidia sells more GPUs.
The only drawback is possibly having some games that don't support portable mode - but that can easily be overcome somewhat with a PS Vita remote play like solution.
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Or perhaps Nintendo could sell a battery pak for the Switch which lets the Tegra X1 in it run at full tilt for about 3 hours for portable mode of these higher end games.
So 400 GFLOPS (roughly) for the portable mode (540p-720p resolution)
And maybe 1-1.5 TFLOP inside the dock? (overclocked Tegra X2?).

The original dock is just a piece of plastic, lol. There's nothing inside of it but a circuit board for the USB and HDMI connections. |
That was stupid of me. You're right of course.

May as well go for a Pro version with a better base console
But I wouldn't get it since it would be more expensive than it already is

If it works like Scorpio and Pro and basically only bumps resolution and maybe framerate but doesn't change the visual fidelity much or have mode exclusive games, yeah, why not?
In a way, that is a concept that works better with the switch than it does with the other consoles because you buy an add-on not a revision, so it doesn't devalue the initial purchase as much and doesn't feel like this wierd inbetween of harware revision and new generation either. Plus Ninteno has an external supplementray computing device patent, wich might be their way of future proofing the Switch for 4k.
I wouldnt get it if I didn't have a 4k TV though.

A bump in resolution would benefit the Switch more than the PS4/XB1 IMO. Because Nintendo skimps on anti-aliasing in most/all of their games, a resolution bump would improve image quality in many games greatly.
I'm more excited for a cooler looking dock than a higher performance dock. I'd still buy it, though.
I'd be in favor of an upgrade to the hardware itself, hopefully in a way that allows it to remain compatible with all of the old controllers/docks (which would allow for a sizable cut to the overall price), so that it also benefits portable mode.
Of course, this shouldn't happen anytime soon... it's rather bad form to release upgrades for a console that's less than a year old.
I expected this back during speculation threads.
