Forums - Gaming - Why PS3 will benifit from GTA IV alot more than 360

Sales trends....If you can see trends toward consumer purchasing habits on prior games, you can tell exactly what they're going to do in the future.

In Japan, Dynasty Warriors 5 launched on both systems. Which one did it do better on, in terms of sales and sales ratios? The PS3. Why? It was considered a big PS3 IP, and was advertised as such - the 360 version faltered because of it. Similarly, the 360 version is being touted as the bigger, better one. Not only this, Sony did specific promotions, and sales incentives (price drop, white PS3) the same week. If you've read ANYTHING about the GTAIV launch, Microsoft might follow suit in the US and drop the price to near-European levels. Guess what will happen then?

In the US, despite the PS3 just recieving a price drop, COD4 sold gangbusters on the 360, and the 360 still had an increase in unit sales the week of COD4 - despite the PS3 doing better thanks to that price drop. 5 months later, guess which one is still the US monster? The 360 version. Why? Despite 'Duty being a neutral IP, it favored the 360's userbase - just like Grand Theft Auto will as well (look at Assassain's Creed in the US for further proof).

Regardless of what you want to say, the userbase, image, and advertising all points to the 360. It has more GTA-friendly games on it than the PS3 does.

wow you're really grasping at straws here. dynasty warriors sold better in japan because the 360 doesn't sell in japan. cod4 sold better because it has more than 2x the install base of the PS3 in America and the 360 is largely regarded as an FPS console.

and gta-friendly games? what the hell does that even mean? you honestly sound like a PR rep.

Hey BCN, how ironic is it that you're calling somebody else a fanboy? Hah! ^_^

The BuShA owns all!

lol mrstickball you're such a fanboy, you honestly think the GTA4 is going to move more consoles for the 360 than the PS3 despite the fact there are already 11.4 million 360s in America and only 4.5 million PS3's? hilarious.

also the PS2 didn't have nearly a 33% failure rate, plus you could easily fix it 90% of the time by cleaning the lense.

Care to prove me wrong using actual analysis and not namecalling? The PS2 didn't have a 33% fail rate, but it was well above industry norms, and many knew about it. My point is that the quality of games overshadows the quality of hardware: the PS2 was the same way, as the 360.

The 360 having 7 million more consoles in the US is precicely the reason that the 360 will see a larger increase than the PS3's version of GTAIV: there are more users in the US that know of GTAIV on the 360, and word of mouth will help lull those users to the 360: Not only will they know it's on 360 since there are more 360 owners, the price, and other issues I noted, should make for a larger increase in the 360's userbase than the PS3s.

Don't get me wrong: the PS3 might see a larger % increase in userbase, but the 360 will see the much larger LTD and YTD userbase from GTAIV, since it'd take 3 times as many consoles sold for the 360 to equal the same % movement for the Playstation 3.

And as stated: Go look at Japanese multi-platform games. It's the same situation in the US, as the 360 enjoys a very large lead over the PS3, like the PS3 enjoys such a large lead in Japan.

Also, to cite Devil May Cry 4 in the US-of-A. A PS2 staple title, exclusive to the Playstation 2:

Console Weekly Total
180,733 (+95%) 9,279,665
153,321 (+30%) 20,791,148
79,953 (+34%) 10,832,675
79,727 (+10%) 47,280,443
72,755 (+9%) 3,912,387
59,765 (-5%) 11,694,828
4,157 (-9%) 41,448,044
168 (-23%) 12,740,859

Notice the +34% to the X360, and only +9% to the PS3? Why is that? Why should the trending be so much different for GTAIV, expecially when we wonder about the likelyhood of a 360 price drop in the US? Don't get me wrong: if Sony drops the PS3's price $50, or $75 and MS doesn't on the 360, it could swing in the PS3's favor, using GTAIV as a Catalyist, but if the X360 drops price in the US, Sony is virtually doomed.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

The 360 will benefit more from GTA4, simply because its cheaper. Though there is a small possibility the PS3 can benefit alot out of this if they advertise more than microsoft.

True True but like u said Dynasty Warriors was a Playstation branded IP just like GTA so shouldnt GTA IV ultimatly do better on PS3?

I think software wise 360's GTAlV could probably outsell Ps3 by 2:1 or maybe even 3:1. But right now I believe GTAlV will move plenty more Ps3 hardware then 360. I mean who the hell wants to spend hundreds of dollars on an old system.

and yes, that stickball guy is such a big M$ fanboy, lol.

I wasn't just talking about mere sales, but the trends of sales: Not only did the PS3 version of Dynasty Warriors 5 sell better, the PS3 saw MUCH larger increases in hardware sales than the 360 did. Most PS3/X360 multiplatform games in Japan have, even uptill now, sold at a 4:1 ratio of PS3/X360 sales, and a similar % increase of relevant Console sales the week of launch. Dynasty Warriors was the PS3's biggest game of 2007, and guess what? It sold at a 7:1 ratio, and the 360 had NO benefit in sales, whereas the PS3 sold very, very, very well. Go look even at DMC4 in Japan: The 360 version sold about at a 4.5:1 ratio, and Hardware sales for the week were:

Hardware:

Console Week Weekly Total
62 97,723 (+27%) 5,204,690
165 69,655 (-2%) 8,236,849
166 69,511 (-13%) 22,007,661
65 39,676 (+23%) 1,904,584
414 12,299 (+8%) 22,383,647
113 6,108 (+40%) 575,302

So the 360 there had a bigger % increase over the PS3 in the week that DMC4 released. Why? There wasn't as much emphasis, on either side, and the 360 maintained the typical 4:1 ratio that we've seen it have vs. the PS3 since the PS3 launched in Japan. GTAIV is to the US as Dynasty Warriors 5 is in Japan: It's a huge, massive game, and it's going to swing to the most attractive gaming console. I feel that the 360 has trended to be the lead console in the US versus the PS3, and therefore, will see the larger sales increases.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

BCNR34, you know what I would actually like to know the failure rate of PS2's. Considering im on my second, then of the people I know that own PS2s, 1 is on his first, 3 on his second and 2 are on there 3rd.

I know other peoples with ps2s but have no idea what number console they are one. Of course this is anecdotal but I would be willing to bet that many other people would have similar experiences. I wouldn't be at all surprised if PS2 failure rate was near that of the 360 (especially for the first 20million sold)

Turkish says and I'm allowed to quote that: Uncharted 3 and God Of War 3 look better than Unreal Engine 4 games will or the tech demo does. Also the Naughty Dog PS3 ENGINE PLAYS better than the UE4 ENGINE.

*runs up to random person*

Me:"what console is GTA 4 on?"
Man:"The playstation"

*runs to store, ignores all the 360 signs, consoles, GTA 4 copies and buys a playstation*

Yea, I can definitly see that happening.
