MK8D is late April, so that alone should be able to cover for May.

We're still in the phase where there is pent up demand that has not been met. Between people who will be enticed by Mario Kart, and people who still want one and haven't gotten it, the Switch should be ok at least until ARMS.

But that excitement, that hype that drives people to buy new hardware in large numbers, it's just not there for MK8 Deluxe because it isn't a new game. |
Did you actually read what I wrote?
Like I wrote, for all people who didnt had Wii U, this is brand new and offcourse great, strong game, and Nintendo will definatly push this game hard.
I understand those that say that the hype for MK8 Deluxe is being exaggerated...
But I think you underestimate one of Nintendo's major audiences: kids don't care that it's not new...
And while we "grown" Nintendo enthusiasts might take Mario Kart very seriously, we can't forget the millions of kids who lose their shit for Mario Kart...
Have a nice day...
Can't sell much better than sold out.
Also, Mario Kart is basically a May game coming up on the 28th of April and all.

This is a question that came up in NeoGAF's NPD thread of last month and it was reposted on VGC. GAF has an NPD employee posting on their site and he answered that GTA V keeps selling so well because it has a high attach rate to new system purchases. So the fact that GTA 5 is among the first games that people pick up with their new console makes it pretty clear that is among the reasons why the system is purchased in the first place. The same holds true for pretty much every game that keeps charting high months or years after its release. |
I don't think things are as simple as that. The game is available on ps4/xb1/xb360/ps3 and PC. Obviously someone who has a PC has no reason to buy a ps4 for it. Same with the other gaming platforms. The first game I bought on ps4 was DMC remastered. I didn't buy a ps4 for it, I bought a ps4 because I wanted a ps4 and I bought the game because I had already played it on ps3 and knew it was great and could only get better (with the improvements they implemented).
Now, had gamestop conducted a survey and new owners claimed they bought x console for GTA5, I'd find it more reliable evidence. GTA and FIfa seem like the games that the average gamer will buy because everyone else is buying them and they need to own them. Not games they would buy a console for if they have other options. Perhaps we'll never know.

From the sound of it, it may be a slow month for the console, but that's okay. There's some great games coming at a later point for people to buy into the console.

I'm pretty sure MK8D and Minecraft will help to keep the momentum through may, but i'm not sure about arms, it looks a nice game but very niche, i don't think it will be a system seller or that it will appeal to the mass.

March 14-April 27 is the dry period, May is not.
Mario Kart is a long tail seller, thinking it's impact will only be for 3 days of April is stupid, it's going to sell well through May and probably acually mainly impact May. So that may as well be a May title.
Minecraft is a pretty big IP. Street Fighter taps into a good demographic for the Switch IMO because I think a lot of Switch owners are older and value this franchise from growing up with it, so that's good. Bomberman did well on Switch, Street Fighter may do better.
I'd say May/June/July are all very solid for Switch.
March 14-April 26 was the period it had to get through without a lot of new software, that 6 week gap or so. But it looks like it's done that just fine. We're sitting at April 15 and it still basically sells out as soon as any new stock hits shelves.
Within 35 days ... Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Minecraft, Ultra Street Fighter II, NBA Playgrounds .... that's not a bad 35 days for the Switch at all.
