Forums - Nintendo - Wii U ports on Switch resolution difference

Would be interesting to see at what resolution Switch can run games like Pokken or Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Could you do it a little more comprehensively though?
Because none of those games are running at above 720P whilst in handheld mode.

Possibly use a proper table?

Well they cant run above 720p in handheld mode...

Well. That's blatantly false.

Also. They can run below 720P.

So how do you make a game run in more than 720p on a 720p screen?

A games rendered resolution is independent of the displays resolution.

Even games which claim "1080P" on the Playstation 4 don't have everything running at 1080P.

Shadows have their own resolution, Textures have their own resolution, even light shafts might run at 720P even if the game is outputting 1080P.

But to answer your question in a more specific manner. There is this thing known as "Down Sampling" otherwise known as "Super Sampling" many forms of Anti-Aliasing actually fundamentally take a similar concept to remove aliasing in games.

A games rendered resolution is independent of the displays resolution.

Well it cant show more than 720p, so thats meaningless.

Also this is about home console vs home console. Thats why he doesnt include what the games run in on the WiiU gamepad either.

The Switch is more than a home console. It should be compared with all it's "modes" otherwise you are cherry picking.

It's not overtly difficult to make it a more comprehensive comparison. It's a forum. There is an edit button.

And maybe he should include the games that run on the Wii U gamepad?

Well if he feels like it, then maybe he will.

We start getting some Wii U ports on Switch, I will put here difference in resolution for those games. I will try updating this thread.

-Zelda BotW Wii U 720p > Zelda BotW Switch 900p (with much better frame rate)

- Mario Kart 8 Wii U 720p > Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Switch 1080p

-Fast Racing Neo Wii U 720p > Fast RMX Switch 1080p (with better visuals)

-Lego City Undercover Wii U 720p > Lego City Undercover Switch 1080p (with better visuals)

Could you do it a little more comprehensively though?

I think that all all Switch games that are released so far are running at 720p in handheld mode, so in native res of Switch screen, so I dont think it so important to state that, but I will add that info.
