Forums - Sony - Disgaea 3 review

Review of Disgaea 3 from a site I usually go to.  If you want a quick synapsis of the game it would go like this:

This game is the most massive and deep Disgaea ever, they took everything and did it better.

Graphics are dissapointing and the game probably could have been done on the PS2, if neither of those bother you than you're good to go.

The review has no spoilers that I noticed.

Expecting cutting edge graphics from Disgaea is silly, but the rest looks pretty good.

That's pretty much what I thought about his graphics comments WoW. But I think a reviewer does need to take that into account, even if it's been a staple for the entire series, so I'm not mad at him for lowering the score a bit and commenting on it.

Didn't even notice the score...

I'm not sure why he deducted points from Control though.  He didn't list any complaints with it and even made several compliments.

Sorry to say this, but graphics were even outdated on the PS2, but that didn't hold the game from selling, neither it will on the PS3 as already seen from the sales in Japan. I most definitely will buy this game, as I don't give a rats about GFX that much really. The fact that the game got 90% for gameplay only, brings a lot of promises. 85% is a pretty damn good score... and not the only one.

Does anyone know if the grinding/power-gaming will be lessened or mitigated this time around? I disliked Disgaea 1 & 2 because I felt that they weren't strategy games, so much as "let's-see-how-much-you-can-exploit-the-level-up-system" games.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

I have always been interested in this series but my friend who plays it all the time made it sound easy (he always shows off about how good he is at games and i normally find out he sucks), this is the type of game that would tip the balance for me getting a PS3 so what is its difficulty like compared to the latest Fire Emblem game? I would like it at least as hard as FE on Normal difficulty.

Hummm.... reading that last sentence I seriously hope that Sony will announce some big time PS3 JRPGs coming.

E3 should be fierce this year. Same goes for TGS.

I think you'll the difficulty depends on how much you grind in Disgaea.

Or how many people you use in your party... assuming 3 isn't different.

In disgaea the level systems are like the oldschool Nintendo RPGs. One or Two levels makes a HUGE difference... like dragonball Z or something, and the system is set up to promote grinding.

So if you take a party of say.... 4-5 characters instead of 10 they're going to level a lot faster and you'll be able to beat the game fairly eaisly without even grinding.

Or at least that was true of 1 and 2.

That's why most SRPGs who allow level grinding also raise the levels of your enemy with it... well to a cap anyway.  Eventually they figure if your level 20 on the 6th stage they should just let you have your dominance.
