Forums - General - So, I started my new job today

May the Lord bless you in your new job. Congrats.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

I've had the same job for almost 5 years. Not the best of jobs, but it keeps me interested enough in wearing pants in the morning.

Good for you, to work is a good part of being an adult and I think it is awesome. To do something that someone finds value in, being serving a meal or building a machine, or cleaning something, or delivering something, whatever, helping your fellow human being.

It is a great thing.

I worked Lawn & Garden at Lowes so I did a hell of a lot of loading. All I can say is make sure you have some pain medication because they will work your ass off in the spring and early summer. If you're working outside then it will be non-stop mulch and landscape stones, rain or shine. Get a good pair of gloves and a great pair of shoes.

Loading in the lumberyard is better in some ways because it's in the shade and less work but I hated when I had to fill in over there because contractors are usually assholes. Lawn & Garden is mostly rich women who want a perfect yard and they can be bitches but they're a lot easier to butter up.

Uh oh, I'm getting worried now. I guess I'm at fault for not being in shape.

It will get you into shape.  Spring is PACKED with customers, most of the staff will be irritable and over-worked, and loaders usually have to walk from one end of the store to the other all day.

Pace yourself and watch out for blisters.  No one is asking you to kill yourself.  It's really just simple manual labor most of the time so it's better than having to push sales.  Loaders also get cake work, too, like loading small stuff into SUVs for middle-aged women.

Still, nothing like someone wanting 80 bags of mulch or 40 bales of straw hand-loaded while it's drizzling rain.  Those 50 pound bags of garden soil are probably the worst, though.

It will put food on the table.

just do healthcare like me ;)

Think of it positively: great chance to get in shape and get paid for it!

Thanks to education I won't have to do any manual labor ever. Know what I did yesterday? I browsed VGC, Reddit and picked up the phone a few times.

And never did manual labour either?

Not as a main occupation. Sometimes I have to lift some heavy stuff and install new hardware into racks but nothing too straining. Which is great. That means I can do my job until I die without worrying about deteriorating health. Praise education.

Seriously though, get in shape. It's good for the body and good for the mind! It has helped me feel better when feeling stressed or feeling down.
