Yes. Chechnia is a traditionalist region. With a lot of muslims there. And for religious man - christian, muslim or jew - to be gay is absolutely inacceptable.

That's what I always found weird about religions, what you said applies for their beliefs as well. For exemple, where I live when something good happens, lots of people attribute it to God and thank he/she/it for it, but when something bad happens, like a murder, they say God had nothing to do with it. This always blew my mind.
