It didn't teleport me, got stuck, had to teleport out myself.

I tried taking a shortcut over the mountain going south west within the map area, I didn't know it was off the map. In the map above it did let me go through the dark areas on the map as well as in other places where I succesfully climbed to the top of mountain peaks. It's inconsistent and seems to have something to do with walling off areas for the story, although in this case everything on both sides of the mountain was already accessible, just not the peak for some reason. Perhaps something pops up there story related later.

It seems "You are leaving the map area, turn back or last save will be reloaded" means you are actually going off bounds, outside the map. (which is what I got going south east in that position) While "Can't enter area" is a story related wall. Just no clue why it was blocking off going west from there. Then there are invisible walls that don't say anything usually within quest areas.

I don't know then :(

I honestly only ever hit a "wall" when I was wondering around and going off map...

I'm confused again after last night. I went off on my own again, it seems "can't enter area" was now at the actual map edge (the water to the east), while the reload threat might be a not yet unlocked area.

In the north east while following a road it threatened me to go ack or else

First I couldn't get into the green bunker, ice in the way, won't melt with fire arrows and bombs can't touch it, dunno. I climbed over the arms to get up on the ridge and the road above to circumvent the bunker. No clue if it's leading outside the map or that I have to do something to unlock it.

Oh well great photo op anyway

Looks like a perfectly legit road down there

Yet I got this

Some guy leaves the Great Plateau without the glider!

Game kills him, though...

There's a spot in a cliff I found. A tiny... cave, if I should call it that... Barely any room to move around in, and there's nothing in there. You can't get stuck. Just jump in, and out.

I found a spot like that too in the desert, except I could not get out, on the side of a cliff while climbing down. The game gives plenty more fast travel packs then bugs in the terrain anyway. I've only used them to get unstuck so far, still 20 left.

One nasty surprise was a reload without warning. Normally it gives you a long warning "Leaving play area", this time it simply reloaded losing all my progress. Oh well, I'm used to it now and got to the desert are which is wide open. A lot of room not to leave the play area, the map really opens up.

That's a story mission.

Ah, I found another one of those icons on the map last night. The game encouraged me to seek it out by Aloy wondering what the machines where doing up there. Yet the final ledge below the tunnel entrance was unpassable, no name this time at the icon while I was right on it. It's the downside of openworld games, getting places too early with the game not knowing what to do with you when you show up. Zelda still had that same issue with the Yiga clan hideout, solid wall where the entrance should be.
