I'll assume you were heading south. Look at the world map above, you tried to go off the map, which is why it teleported you.

It didn't teleport me, got stuck, had to teleport out myself.
I tried taking a shortcut over the mountain going south west within the map area, I didn't know it was off the map. In the map above it did let me go through the dark areas on the map as well as in other places where I succesfully climbed to the top of mountain peaks. It's inconsistent and seems to have something to do with walling off areas for the story, although in this case everything on both sides of the mountain was already accessible, just not the peak for some reason. Perhaps something pops up there story related later.
It seems "You are leaving the map area, turn back or last save will be reloaded" means you are actually going off bounds, outside the map. (which is what I got going south east in that position) While "Can't enter area" is a story related wall. Just no clue why it was blocking off going west from there. Then there are invisible walls that don't say anything usually within quest areas.
I played both games. Enjoy both of them almost equally, for different reasons.
I'd put Zelda above Horizon overall, but both games remained on my mind for quite some time after I finished them.
I don't think they compare with each other, as both take a different enough approach to open world, and both set out to provide something different.
Both stellar games, and I can't wait to see where their expansion and sequel take us.
The main gripe here is that you can't climb every mountain or go off map. Alllllrrriiiiiightythen.
Is there a meaningful reason to climb the tallest peak, or is it for personal satisfaction?
Nah, that's not a fail.

That's why I am a bit scared of starting Horizon, I am going to start in the summer.. a few months after beating Zelda not to have it fresh in my memory.

no worries man, you don't have to be a mountain climber to enjoy the game. HZD is superior than Zelda in other areas, and vice versa.

Yeah game looks beautiful. Looking forward to it, it is afterall the biggest reason I bought a PS4 in the first place :P I am just afraid it wont feel free enough. Which is why I will wait.

My main gripe is getting stuck on the terrain or falling to my death because of invisible walls.
There is no other reason than to find your own path instead of following the yellow trail. Mountain peaks are the best spots to orientate yourself.

I don't know then :(
I honestly only ever hit a "wall" when I was wondering around and going off map...
