Forums - Sales - Will 2017 end the yearly decline of dedicated gaming hardware?

You should rename the topic to "decline in dedicated handheld market" because really that's what's been declining.

Pretty sure consoles have declined as well.

From 2007-2011, Wii+PS3+360 averaged over 40 million/year.

From 2014-2016, PS4+XBO+Wii U averaged under 28million/year.

Your average is heavily skewed by the Wii's success with the casual audience and the WiiU's poor performance.

I see. Home consoles and handhelds lumped together again. VGChartz.
Case closed.

Wait, so you're saying if we exclude PSP, DS & Wii (340 million sales & 2/3 of 7th gen sales) than the dedicated gaming market is doing fine compared to last generation?

lol, that has got to be the worst case of cherry picking i have ever seen.

My predictions

PS3/360/Wii U-500k combined

Vita-about 1 million

3DS-4.5 million

XBO-8 million

PS4-17 million

NSW-12 million

Total-43 million

I believe 2017 will see the first YOY increase in hardware sales since 2008.

Did you miss Scorpio in that list, or is that included in XB one's 8 million. Which suggests Xb one will be flat year on year.

If we count in smartphone sales we won't.

your point?

people dont buy smartphones specifically for games, they do for home/handheld game consoles.

It could be a slight increase for 2017, but that will be negated by all the hardware that's leaving the market. Especially since the Switch will carry the burden of both the Wii U and 3DS and the Vita won't have a successor. And I doubt Scorpio will exceed the success of the PS4 Slim and Pro.

That said, certain games are coming out that may renew interest in existing hardware. Dragon Quest XI and Gran Turismo in particular.

Yes, thats including Scorpio.

I dont see Scorpio really doing a whole lot for XBO annual sales. PS4 was flat YOY last year, according to Sony it sold 17.4m in 2015 & 17.5m in 2016 (less than 1% increase). Slim+Pro+PS VR didnt cause any notable YOY growth and I dont see Scorpio being any different.

I could see it being up or down slightly, 7.5 at the lowest and 9 million at the highest.
