There are frankly too many of them in my local area. Have four of them in a space could drive from any one of them to another in ten-fifteen minutes. Getting rid of two of them makes sense.

I think this is a good thing. Gamestop overexpanded and other retailers such as Amazon & Best Buy offer much better deals for video games. Hopefully, this gives Gamestop the kick in the rear to improve.
While I don't shop at Gamestop anyways, it is not good news when a retailer that mainly sells video game is doing badly.. they probably over-expanded, but still is a bit worrying

RTU has been harping on this since I started watching his video years ago. lol
Gamestop is a tough sell with the Best Buy and Amazon savings on new games. I haven't paid $60 for a game since 2015, and the savings are enough that I no longer feel the need to trade anything in. Gamestop is now the more expensive option, and their customer experience tends to be awful. It sounds like they're still doing fine, but I can see them needing to cut down and diversify in order to maintain their relevance (also maybe don't have 2 Gamestops in a single mall as they did in my area until a few months ago. You could literally walk fifty feet from one to get into the other, the most pointless waste of space I've seen).

The End Is Near. GameStop Is Closing Approx. 225 Stores Worldwide |
More info to add context to this empty thread:
|
GameStop has 6,614 stores in operation, of which 4,434 are located in the United States, 343 in Canada, 413 in Australia/New Zealand and 1,424 are in Europe. Our stores operate primarily under the names of GameStop and EB Games. Our stores sell new and used video game software, hardware and accessories for video game systems from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. In addition, the company sells PC entertainment software, related accessories and other merchandise. |
So 225 stores being closed is 3% of all of their stores or 5% of their stores in US.
What I'd pull from this is that their growth has stalled over many years now and they are removing the dead weight. Its clear that is true from the other actions they've taken over the last, idk, 10 years maybe. Where they've branched well beyond just gaming and added other types of electronics, aggressive used game policies, and what seems like half of their floor space is with merchandise only loosely related to games if at all.
