The original DS is probably a better comparison.
It sold sold well but nothing amazing in its first 1.5 years but it really took off in Spring 2006 when the revision and a few big casual hits released.

The PS4 is a whole other animal. It sold better with less barriers around scarcity.

Wii U did similar. Understanding history is why I am not flinching towards Nintendo, but I cant say I havent felt a tinge of impulse.

Where I'm at, it's totally sold out, haven't even seen one, one of the many gamestops near my house has over 300 people on the next shipment call.
