Forums - Gaming - March NPD - biggest software sales for a Q1 month, ever?

If not, it will surely get close. March tracking begins at the end of February, so even Horizon counts

Horizon

Zelda

Ghost Recon

Nier (not big I know, but may do half decent numbers)

Mass Effect Andromeda

MLB The Show

GTAV (because why not)

1-2 Switch might even do decently

I can't think of any recent times with so many big hitters. Will it be a record breaker?

It could be, but I doubt it. The Switch will probably have at max about one million systems, and Horizon will likely do in the 500k range or so (maybe more, maybe less, hard to tell with a new IP). I know GTA 5 released on a non-holiday month, and it's going to be hard to compete with that monster when there were more than 60 million ps3 and 360's in US homes back then.

Maybe I should change it to biggest Q1 month ever

That's debatable. After usually nothing for the two months prior to September, this is the month the games start pouring in. Console sales start ramping up and the excitement heightens. I think Celador is excluding September too if I'm not wrong.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

I take Holiday to be November and December, when sales dramatically increase, but Celador can define it however Celador pleases, and now that is a Q1 month. As to that, I wouldn't know, but I do agree with Celador that March is going to be a great month sales-wise. Just speaking personally, I'm buying five (!) games, if I can find Nier, Nioh and Ghost Recon at Target next week for their buy two get one sale. If not, then I'm still buying three games (already have Horizon, am getting Nier and Mass Effect).

I would say that the Switch has a really good chance to sell the initial 2 million initial units, due to the pre-order selling out, maybe even a bit more if Nintendo manages to make some more in time, but other than that I agree with you.

Oh yeah, I agree with that completely, I just thought that 2 million was a worldwide number. My 1 million guess for the Switch is just for the US, based upon their estimate of 2 million worldwide. I think they're going to sell whatever they ship, at least to North America and Asia. Europe I'm less certain about, especially since Amazon UK still has Switch in stock (or at least they did last night) which is a bit surprising to me, I have to admit. I think the Switch is going to do quite well.

Oh yeah, forgot for a moment that NPD is US only.

What do you suppose the current record holder is? We do need something to compare it to.

I did try to find a definite answer with no luck

However, there were a couple of March results that stood out

2011: Pokemon White/Black, Homefront, Dragon Age 2, Crysis 2

2008: Super Smash Brawl, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Army of Two (this month mainly down to Smash though)

The March that looked most likely to me though

2010: God of War 3, Pokemon Soul Silver/Heart Gold, FF XIII, Battlefield Bad Company 2

I remember Wii sold more than 700k that month, an absolutely insane number, and Smash did incredible.
