I could see it doing that as a Wii U exclusive. Its done nearly 2m as a non exclusive hasnt it?

1.5mil. Not sure if wiiu will ship another 500k. WiiU is non existent now. Im surprised it did that much honestly.

LoZ WW HD did 2mil+ closer to 2.5mil so im basing 5mil+ on that and some

It did 1.5m as non exclusive and if it was exclusive to Wii U it seems like people would've went and bought it there as they'd have no reason for Switch purchase at that point. Scenario is definitely interesting to think about. Either way it seems like BOTW total is gonna cost to 10m

It will easily cross the 10 million barrier for sure. It will have amazing legs and have boost in the coming years once they release new Zelda games.

Not that I should engage you, but just to shut you up...

Madden

Sonic The Hedgehog

Street Fighter

Mortal Kombat

NBA 2K

FIFA

Donkey Kong

I'd say there's a very limited amount of people outside of North America who gives a rats ass about the franchise, let alone knows it exist.

You mean no one gives a "rat's ass" about the franchise outside of the biggest video game market in the world? Oh okay...

We’re aware of it, but you’re right, Some even play it! Most find the very idea of Madden to be depressingly boring!

Also, Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and NBA 2K more well known than Zelda?  HAHAHA, not on planet Earth! FIFA is big, but it’s doubtful most know it for the game so much as the license; as a game, Zelda is doubtlessly more well known.

These 3 for sure without a doubt especially in the 90's

In the 90s there was Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time - these were two of the most well received games in history, while Street Fighter And Mortal Kombat we’re popular for like 3 years in the early 90s; but neither approached Zelda status, by the end of the 90s they were definitely not making waves like Ocarina of Time; which, on top of being the most anticipated game in history at the time, was also the heaviest marketed game which included one of the first (if not the first) cinema trailers. The franchise was also among the first to receive extensive TV and magazine marketing.

Zelda, in the 90s was revered as the most important gaming franchise (even if not as popular and iconic as Mario).

And if we’re considering popularity in older decades as part of the equation, Zelda gets even more points, in the 80s Zelda was selling millions, the others were either unknown or not even yet in existence.

Today, on public websites, voted for popularity

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

All this said, I strongly maintain my BOLD prediction.Breath of the Wild will easily sell one MILLION units!

Not really Zelda is far more known than those game even back then with only Sonic really coming close, this is because the Zelda franchise is pretty much the face for the adventure genre to the point the are a lot of media pop cultures that reference the franchise especially Link's iconic appearance, as mentioned by someone else ALTTP and OOT were a force especially OOT which became the template for 3D game design.

Yes, There's a big world outside of North America.

No one cares about Madden there. That's what I said, and it's true.

You're veering way off the original question posed by tbone51. The question was "Name 10 franchises people know more than zelda of the mainstream." Not what is your favorite video game series, notoriety and popularity are two different things.

Yeah, except Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were revolutionary as well. You see there was a thing back in the day called an arcade, these games were everywhere liquor stores, movie theaters, amusment parks...heck both of them had big budget movies. Zelda did not.

And Sonic was the FACE of SEGA, put up a picture of Sonic and a picture of Link to the average person that is not a gamer and see which one is guessed correctly more often. THAT is what I'm referring to.

Repeating it again doesn't make it any truer. And if we're talking about North America, that happens to be ZELDA's biggest market by far. So why not compare both on their home turf?

Looking at it today, it's pretty clear that it will easily surpass 10M counting Switch+WiiU and physical+digital.

Because It's not a north american only comparison. Worldwide in gaming, Zelda is a much bigger brand than Madden. Heck, even the numbers support it.

In North America it might be the other way but that was never the question from the start. But sure, Madden is bigger in NA than Zelda. Though I could See BotW outsell the latest entry of Madden in NA this time around.
